I use that M/V Summit Venture incident as a case study when I'm teaching new watch standers about channel navigating and RADAR use. It adds a bit more to it when I take them out and show them the remains of the old bridge. (The state made fishing piers out of the approaches to the original bridge).
Having done that approach many times in nasty weather WITH GPS, I can easily see how one could miss the opening with bad vis and only LORAN/visible ATONs.
