Paint color question
« on: October 01, 2013, 02:58:35 PM »
My color vocabulary is about as big as the crayola box that has 16 colors.

What's the standard not-quite-white-but-it-is-pretty-much-white color that gets used in most apartments and rental properties?

Reason I ask, is my house is feeling a little bit dark recently.  And the lighting is just a skosh bit too... yellow.  And I realized, my walls are some sort no not-tan-not-white-sort-of-dust-color, and my ceiling is the same color.  I'm thinking about painting the ceilings something closer to white so that the reflected light from the lamps is whiter.

My wife calls that "rental white". Otherwise known as off white or eggshell.
And on a related note,
I'm told there is an iPhone app that let's you scan a color and get precise manufacturers color codes to match an existing color.
What we have here is failure to communicate.

Around here there's Navajo white too, which i use on both my home and my rentals. There's gotta be a dozen "off-whites" at the paint store I usually go to, and honestly they all look the same to me until you put the samples right next to each other.

Go to the paint store and ask for "Renter's White" - they'll know just what shade of euchre eggshell seafoam wite you want.

stay safe.

Eggshell is a sheen. Flat only on ceilings, unless it's a kitchen - then use eggshell so it can be cleaned.

If the ceiling gets washed by a lot of natural light, and you want as much reflection as possible, use a straight base bright white (e.g., Sherwin Williams Extra White).

Do not use the bright white if the ceiling is not washed in natural light (think some vaulted ceilings, or ceiling stepped up); the bright white will look like it is bluish-grey. The solution here is to use a white that is slightly creamy (a 'warm' white as opposed to a 'cool' white; e.g., Sherwin Williams 'Marshmallow').

My apt mgrs. provide free apartment white.  Might ask.  Can't hurt.  Might do some good.  You never get a yes unless you ask.

Works with women, too.

That's true, women almost never give you free paint unless you explicitly ask for it. Of course, it'd be kinda weird if they did...

Um... I own my house.  Asking the landlord means asking myself.  Then I start having internal monologues, which turn into external monologues, and before you know it I'm flying around the city in a cape and getting sucked into jet engines.  No good comes from asking in this case. ;)

A decade or so ago I did more traveling than I like. Seems the wife would decide to paint things while I was out of town. Easier to beg forgiveness than ask permission sort of thing.
Her taste in colors don't match well with mine.

Came home to a bathroom painted Burn Your Retinas Harvest Orange.
Another trip and the living room was painted Nutmeg Frost My ass, That's *expletive deleted*ing Pink
I won't talk aout what color she used in the kitchen [barf]
The wall in the hallway still sports a floor to ceiling flower motif mural. That ones kind of cool so it gets to stay.
She also doesn't think she needs to bother with masking tape, she's wrong about that.

Chart's no good - does not have puce.  (It's purr-ple, but not PURR-ple.)

Also does not have chartruse, but that's a whole different color-blindness discussion.

stay safe.

Neither does it have mauve.  Mauve is great male color because apparently it can be pretty much any color from tan to blue.

wasn't mauve one of the "golden girls"?

antique white is one of the rental colors, unless your from arizona where they prefer navajo white.  unfortunatly there are 20 shades to each, depending on the paint manufacturer.

Uh, I went with WHITE.

I went into Home Depot yesterday and the paint dept was having a special on WHITE ceiling paint.  Not marshmellow, not swiss latte foam, not cotton.  WHITE.

So, I got 4 gallons of WHITE flat paint, and 1 gallon of WHITE semi-gloss for the bathrooms.  I dropped $200 there between rollers and extension handles and paint and masking tape and a utility step ladder and other goodies.

I started last night in the living room, masked out half the room and brushed in the edges.  Did a Walking Dead marathon while I was doing it, worked from about 5:30 until 9 or so with a break for pizza for dinner somewhere in there.  It's gonna take two coats for sure, but I like it.  Definitely helps with the daytime light levels and color temperature.  It's gonna be a pretty big project to finish the whole house.  I'll probably need 4 more gallons of the WHITE flat paint.

The slightly off-white auto paint at O'Reilly's Auto Parts is called "Irish Lassie".

I used an airless sprayer to do our ceilings, it was a huge time saver.
