Hmm wonder if the thieves are dead of radiation poisoning yet after they opened the container...

Won't be long.  That stuff is suuuuuper hot.  Depends on how close the contact was and for how long, but supposedly the Co was found some distance away, so somebody won't need another haircut by dawn, and it'll be downhill from there.

Assuming it's relatively new, of course.  And that somebody spent more than a couple seconds holding it.  If it's decades old, there's very little cobalt in there, but somebody is still ending up in a hospital.

There's a lesson here...  First, don't steal.  Second, lead is used to shield things.

Corollary: Don't crack open a lead capsule after stealing it.

It's not the first time this has happened in mexico. At least it was found before it was melted down and turned into lawn furniture.

I think ~150 people received a good bit of exposure.  3 or 4 people died within 2 weeks.  I'm fuzzy whether it was Co60 or Cs137.  Either way it was ugly.

Edit-  I'm mixing up two incidences from south of the border. The 1st was Co60 (1983) in Mexico.  The 2nd was Cs137 (1987) in Brazil.

They use or used to use Cobalt-something for radiation treatments  =|

Still use Co60 for gamma sources in radiation treatments - a lot of treatments are now done with high energy, large dose x-rays that don't require a "hot" source, but there are some cancers that just respond better to gamma rays.

Update: 6 people admitted to hospital with exhibiting symptoms consistent with radiation sickness.  Hospital has been blocked off by police.

Very punny.

I was wondering how much of the facility and how many staff were contaminated by their new patients.

The Brazil incident, very sad for the child that died from directly applying the glowing source to her body. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Goi%C3%A2nia_accident

There is no risk of contamination to the hospital workers unless someone is carrying around pieces of it.
They got there dose and no its just the effects.

So, I normally assume that the press will call David's sling a .9mm caliber Glock AK-47, but this incident irks me for some reason.

Although, one article says 40g of material recovered.  That's one minute at arm's length to get a lethal dose.  It's likely most of it is nickel, but that's still not long.  Nasty stuff.

Hospital abandonment

The Instituto Goiano de Radioterapia (IGR), a private radiotherapy institute in Goiânia,[1] was just 1 km (0.62 mi) northwest of Praça Cívica, the administrative center of the city. It moved to its new premises in 1985, leaving behind a caesium-137-based teletherapy unit that had been purchased in 1977. The fate of the abandoned site was disputed in court between IGR and the Society of Saint Vincent de Paul, then owner of the premises. On September 11, 1986, the Court of Goiás stated it had knowledge of the abandoned radiological material in the building.

Four months before the theft, on May 4, 1987, Saura Taniguti, then director of Ipasgo, the institute of insurance for civil servants, used police force to prevent one of the owners of IGR, Carlos Figueiredo Bezerril, from removing the objects that were left behind.[5] Figueiredo then warned the president of Ipasgo, Lício Teixeira Borges, that he should take responsibility "for what would happen with the caesium bomb".

The court posted a security guard to protect the hazardous abandoned equipment. Meanwhile, the owners of IGR wrote several letters to the National Nuclear Energy Commission, warning them about the danger of keeping a teletherapy unit at an abandoned site, but they could not remove the equipment by themselves once a court order prevented them from doing so.

Theft of the source

On September 13, 1987, the guard in charge of daytime security, Voudireiṇo da Silva, did not show up to work, using a sick day to attend a cinema screening of Herbie Goes Bananas with his family. That same day, "scavengers" Roberto dos Santos Alves and Wagner Mota Pereira illegally entered the partially demolished facility, found the teletherapy unit Рwhich they thought might have some scrap value Рand placed it in a wheelbarrow, taking it to Alves's home, about 0.6 kilometres (0.4 mi) north of the clinic.
