I vote send in a helo, air drop supplies, and fly back.

Attach a note wishing them well in their experiment tracking freezing and thawing cycles of the ice cap  >:D

You're more generous than me.

I'd let Amazon's little UAV things drop a few copies of this off:

Shackleton made it out,  let these dolts find their own way home.

An aside,  that book is an excellent read.

They got rescued from one stranded ship and are now stuck on another stranded ship.  >:D

Where's the double hippy facepalm smiley when you need it.  :facepalm:That will suffice.

Nope, not according to news reports.

Oh, I know. No offense taken.

But it does seem that all the stuff I grew up with that was effective is no longer available.

Wood Preen floor cleaner/restorer -- gone.

Carbona home "dry" cleaning fluid -- gone.

Cabot's creosote house stain -- gone.

Given some time, I could expand the list exponentially. All the good stuff has been replaced by products that are touted as eco-friendly, non-toxic, yada yada. That's all well and good, except ... they don't work nearly as well as the "nasty" products they're supposed to replace.

Once again, the U.S. is called upon to got someone else out of hot cold water.
I'm surprised the Russkies didn't send their nuke powered ice breaker there to help.

Two things

1.  The Coast Guard Cutter Polar Star had been heading to that area anyway, having left its home port of Seattle early last month to eventually break through sea ice and refuel the U.S. Antarctic Program's McMurdo Station on Ross Island.
Now the icebreaker is retooling to help the Russian ship Akademik Shokalskiy and China's Xue Long due to "sufficient concern that the vessels may not be able to free themselves from the ice," the Coast Guard said Saturday in a statement.

2.  Article98

Duty to render assistance

1.   Every State shall require the master of a ship flying its flag, in so far as he can do so without serious danger to the ship, the crew or the passengers:

(a)   to render assistance to any person found at sea in danger of being lost;

(b)   to proceed with all possible speed to the rescue of persons in distress, if informed of their need of assistance, in so far as such action may reasonably be expected of him;

(c)   after a collision, to render assistance to the other ship, its crew and its passengers and, where possible, to inform the other ship of the name of his own ship, its port of registry and the nearest port at which it will call.

I just read that they planned to plant hundreds of trees to "offset the carbon footprint of the rescue efforts".  Never mind the carbon footprint of the planned trip, or paying for the dollar value of the rescue.  I'm just fascinated by the idea of planting trees as moral compensation.

No, they originally intended to plant 500 trees to offset the carbon footprint of their little excursion. Current estimates are that it will require many thousands of trees to compensate for the total carbon footprint of the debacle.

I will circle back to the post I made on page 1.

Isn't summer down there this time of year?

Then why is the ice growing (now entrapping, at last count, three ships)?  If there was globular wörming, should it not be shrinking at this time of year?

Could it be that the lack of solar activity (i.e. Sun spots, of which there currently are and have been around zero) when we are supposed to be a peak period in the 11 year cycle be the cause of this brutal winter here, and cold summer there?

I know solar scientists are rather concerned about the lack of solar activity in that we could be entering another Maunder Minimum.

I would like to point out what a flaming PITA it is to compare human output to say the 1815 eruption of Mount Tambora*.
But according to sources I found, the US produces 199,500 tons per year.*
Since the US is alleged by Greenies to consume 25% of the worlds resources. A back of the envelope number of  798,000 per year for global manmade air pollution.  Which sounds like a lot until you read:
The 1815 Mount Tambora eruption 1,550,000,000,000 tons.
The 1991 Mount Pinatubo eruption ejected 110,000,000,000 tons of magma and 22,000,000 tonnes (22,000,000 short tons) SO2 and Pinatubo only dropped temps by .5C for a year.

Also take into account that most of the manmade pollution is either CO2 or H2O and those have negative impacts on the climate is rate *Not Much*, which is why the Greenies are pushing that CO2 is *EVIL BAD*.

*- It's hard to make an apples to apples comparison as for Volcanoes they measure cubic yards or meters of ejected material, and the one pollution number I found listed tons (or short tons).  In fact, I was unable to find a worldwide number, and only found one for the US.   Despite several searches using different terms.

Yes, it is. In fact, pretty much the peak of what passes for summer in them parts.

*raises hand* why can't we just leave down there and say "That way you can wait till it melts and then come back and tell us how bad this global warming really is."

Sure, it's a waste of a good boat (s) (how many are stuck now?) and a polor bear might eat one of the "researchers" and get sick, but I think the potential reward outweighs the cost.

Wrong continent. They might get nibbled to death by penguins though, or be attacked by the mighty Sea Leopard.

As to the trees, Turney says more are needed, but he has yet to work out how many. Right now he's at 800 Kauri trees and climbing.

Oh, well, nevermind. A sea leapord can disgest anything and death by penguin would just be epic, regardless of the fact that they'd all get sick and die.

Perhaps we could have airdropped some polar bears along with the Shackleton book.

They probably were going to plant the trees on Antarctica thinking the global warming would make it a new tropical paradise.
