That 316 always catches my eye, like the $3.16.9 price per gallon of gas at a local fuelery a couple of days ago. The "9" of course, is a little tiny add-on number, so 3.16 jumped out at me.
Sorta like catching calibers on digital clocks and the like... 2:43, 3:57 and that there kinda thing.
Would I be a prick if I re-emphasized that I was not knocking the Little Sisters of the Poor, just the juxtaposition of "Poor" and the beautiful surroundings?
Thanks for the sidelight on the "eye of the needle" expression, HankB. Sort of like the "Let no man add or take away from these words" ending of some Biblical (and I'm sure other contemporary) writings.
I'd like to add that even
if they actually are unionizing somehow to beat out some of the Affordable Care Act costs, it's probably just a good business practice. I would not be surprised if other companies, organizations, or whatever, are taking advantage of that as an unintended cost-avoidance "loophole."
You know, like, "Let's pass this 1000+ page bill so we can find out what's in it." (Feinstein?)
I can hear the "secular" discussion that probably went on, in my mind's ear:
"Oooookay, Monsignor, then how about we unionize the facility? That might work."
"Hmmmm, not a bad idea, Father. Why don't you look into it for me? What do you think? The Teamsters?"
"Yeah, well, maybe. They're always looking for new affiliates."
"Okay, it's a go on that... now, how about the new roof on St. Swithin's Church? Isn't that the oldest Church in the Parish? Father Francis, have you looked into getting bids for that?"
.... :D
I can see it now: "Little Sisters of the Poor, Teamsters Affiliate Local 316."
Hey, it's a business, too, just like any other.
