1999 Dodge Ram 1500
« on: February 27, 2014, 01:08:03 PM »
I'm looking at a 1999 Dodge Ram 1500 pickup.  Apparently it's a Laramie, with the extended cab, lots of power options, automatic transmission, 4x4, towing package, etc.  Relatively low mileage at 79,000, literally driven by a little old lady for the last few years.  Or so they're claiming.  Asking $7,999.

I was wondering if anyone has any tips to offer regarding this particular model?  Anything in particular to look out for?

TIA

1999 RAM

I don't see that many from that era on the roads like I do with Fords and Chevys. I know that they like to rust out pretty bad.

I've known 3 guys that had that era dodge and that engine.  All had nasty electrical issues, one that electrolysised his aluminum water pump like 5 times.  He was forever swapping that thing.

Was that the 5.9 V8?  I forgot to mention it's got the magnum engine.

Is that the old 360 V8?  That was a good motor, but I do not know how they modified it in the latter years.

Dodge called anything with more than four cylinders "Magnum" for a while there.

Yeah, the pictures are scant.  I spoke to the guy and will be looking at it this weekend.  It's nearby.  We're expecting snow this weekend so I'll be able to try out the 4WD.

I wouldn't know the difference between a 360 engine and a full circle.  I do know this one is a 5.9 liter, as opposed to 5.2.  And I know 5.9 is bigger than 5.2, so it must be better.  Right?

Depends - you want more power or better gas mileage  ???

My only experience with the 318 (5.2),  was that it's completely gutless.

I've got a '97 sitting in the driveway that has 290K on the clock, though it has the v6 engine and manual trans. and needs a waterpump. I had just over 200K on it when I let my daughter have it and I had nothing other than routine maintenance to do. Over all I think they were a solid truck with a few exceptions. The dash on that era had a tendency to completely come apart, big cracks and just literally fall apart. there is an aftermarket fix for it that consists of a replacement panel.

Once they get that old condition  is the most important factor.

I'd hope so, the engine was still in the break in period!

If you know what you are doing you can squeeze 400hp out an 318.

Test drove a 1500 Ram with the 318,  and an F150  with the 300 straight 6.  Went with the Ford.  (Both had manual trans).   I'm sure a 318 can be tarted up,  but out of the box, it wasn't that impressive.

Yeah but that truck came with about 250.  So you have some work ahead of you.

You can get 350 hp out a 300 ford with time and money.

That is 70 more horsepower than a 1989 vintage factory 318.

To get more HP just takes money and time.
