Well that was fun.
« on: April 24, 2014, 07:20:51 AM »
Mowed my yard for the 2nd time this afternoon.  Just about done and I get a whiff of something burning. My thought was that it's way to windy for someone to be burning leaves. I finished the last little bit and parked the mower between the house and shop so I could wash it down.
I was a little surprised to see the flames rolling out off the deck.
For a second or so I thought about letting it go but I grabbed the hose and put it out. Looks like the only damage was the $45 deck belt.
I'd picked up a bunch of dead leaves and they'd gotten jammed in around the spindle and the friction set them on fire.
If ye love wealth better than liberty, the tranquility of servitude better than the animating contest of freedom, go home from us in peace. We ask not your counsels or your arms. Crouch down and lick the hands which feed you. May your chains set lightly upon you, and may posterity forget that you were our countrymen.

So the flames were on the mower deck, not a wooden deck attached to your house?

'Cause ya had me real worried for a minute.

Self-clearing mower.  Where can I get one?

I always park the mower out on the little bit of concrete driveway for a while before putting it back in the garage after mowing  ;)

If it has been extra dry, I hit the mower deck (engine running) with the hose when I am done. I've also had the duff fire on my mower deck.

I dunno about splashing water on a hot engine  =|

I hose mine down a few times a season, while off/cold.

I cracked a cylinder doing this with a lawn mower.  I thought the engine was sufficiently cool, and the cylinder disagreed with me.

I don't hit it with a full stream, crap builds up under the muffler and a few places away from the engine. I have a 2cycle lawnmower, so less of a heat sync due to no oil reservoir.
