Saw this on an episode of, I think, "Extreme Homes" on the Home & Garden channel. This is the only link I could find.

These folks are south of DFW in Italy. In the past, they've created these structures and covered them with earthen berms. Not long ago one of their underground domes was for sale on some acreage near Jacksonville, TX. I've seen video of the structure; pretty remarkable, if you can get used to a constant temperature year-round and the limited sunlight coming in.

I've been a fan of underground dwellings for a long time. I get all excited about a place you can heat with a couple of 100 watt lightbulbs. It appeals to my cheap Scot nature.

How do you keep the water out of your missile silo "luxury home"?  Around here it's quite the accomplishment if you can keep your conventional basement dry year round.

20 some years ago i looked into this as a possibility before buying a conventioanl home.

the claims of energy savings are generally true, but the additional upfront capital costs dwarf any potentail savings.

the real downside is what happens when you ahve to move and the $100,000 you have sunk in a non-conventioanl home can't be sold for anything even near to what you have in it?

Search for "atrium" homes, those are half covered, generally halfway into a hill.

I would guess that a complex system of pumps and sub-basements. I dont know for sure, but I would be willing to bet that our government didnt leave our nukes sitting in a pool of water.

Here're a couple of links for you.  The second is pretty interesting, as it shows the process of building an earth-sheltered home from start to finish.
