Moto frustration!
« on: July 19, 2014, 12:16:00 PM »
So, a couple of days ago the front brakes on my FJ went out. Lever falls to the grip, minimal actual braking. Made for an interesting ride home, yay for bikes having mechanical transmissions and a separate brake for the other wheel.

I went looking for a master cylinder kit. The dealers in town don't stock them, and they want $50 to have it delivered by next Wednesday. I stopped by the little shop of scooters we have here run by a guy who has been at this two-wheel thing for a looong time. He told me there was no point in even trying the dealers - my bike is too old. Wound up ordering the kit from eBay for $35 delivered.

No such thing as instant parts gratification with these things.

And now I'm bikeless until I get this fixed. The Mrs. took the little bike, the XS400.

Just mash on the back edge of the fender really hard with your foot.

BB is usually a little more expensive than RA, but they also usually have everything and ship faster.
A plan is just a list of things that doesn't happen.
Is defenestration possible through the overton window?

I already have a hole in the fender...

For emergency stops, carry a piece of 1" rebar you can stick in the spokes.

Years ago I lost a shoe on the way home from work.

I liked to ride in tennis shoes so I tied the laces of my Oxfords together and let them hang straddling the back seat.Worked for months. Then one day I smelled something almost like hot rubber and the bike slowed down quickly when I pulled in the clutch.A shoe had gotten sucked in,sole to tire. That sucker was hot(!) when I pulled it out.Stinky and covered with rubber dust too.$100 mistake.Got a little laugh out of it though.Bike was fine.

If you take the rebar advice mount a video camera first.

Should probably stand up on the seat first too; sliding forward over the gas tank isn't as bad as in the days of gas caps that stuck up a couple inches, but I still wouldn't expect it to be too comfy.

Right after the gas tank there are the bars, the dash, the windshield...

Yeah, but that's a nice big bunch of stuff to stop you.  The problem with the old gas caps was that they caught only where you didn't want to be caught.
