Obama declines "ice bucket challenge"
« on: August 15, 2014, 09:23:15 PM »
The latest thing is to have a bucket of ice water dumped over your head to raise awareness for ALS research.

Ethel Kennedy took the challenge, and invited Obama to participate.  Apparently, getting a bucket of ice water dumped on your head is demeaning to the office of POTUS.

I am amazed at this, considering how many other things he has done that have demeaned, debased, and debauched the imiage of the Presidency.

But to his credit, Obama did declare that he will make a contribution of our tax dollars to ALS research.  (Amount undeclared and unknown till next year's taxes are shared.  No indication that his contribution will come from his private money.)

stay safe.
If cowardly and dishonorable men sometimes shoot unarmed men with army pistols or guns, the evil must be prevented by the penitentiary and gallows, and not by a general deprivation of a constitutional privilege.

Hey you kids!! Get off my lawn!!!

They keep making this eternal vigilance thing harder and harder.  Protecting the 2nd amendment is like playing PACMAN - there's no pause button so you can go to the bathroom.

People challenge you to do it, then they donate some specific amount if you do (e.g., "I will donate $100 to ALS research if "X" does the ice bucket challenge").

Still sounds stupid. Why not just donate the friggin money?

I think he should do it, just make sure the water in the bucket is frozen solid first.

What the *expletive deleted* good does that do? That just sounds stupid as hell.

It shows that you are just a "regular guy/gal" underneath all that money and privilege and fawning synchophants.

Why do top cops get "locked up" until so many dollars are contributed to X-charity (an amount amusingly referred to as their "bail")?

Why do movie starts and other useless Hollywood types (but I repeat myself) play something that remotely resembles a junior Little League game where their adoring fans pay rediculous sums  of money to eat crappy hot dogs and drink warm horse piss so that the receipts can be turned over to X-charity?

stay safe.

Either way a worthy cause gets some much needed money.

But he would score a lot of points with some people if he were to do it.  Hell he could sell tickets and raise even more money.  I vote dunk tank.

Why did Brad go walkabout in funny shoes?

I don't remember if there were any donations involved in Brad's case, but anyway, stuff like that is called "marketing." It interests people, livens things up, etc. Probably nets more donations.

Just saw on ESPN who did a story on the young man that has been the inspiration behind this challenge and mentioned that over a $1 million has been raised so far this way.

NO!  IT'S STUPID.  GORRAM LIBTARDS SHOULD JUST DONATE MONEY. [/APS]

I view this as just another 'thon like the various bike-a-thons I've done, and similar "events".  If it adds a bit of levity to a serious subject and loosens the purse strings a bit, who cares if it's silly?

Me:  I'm going to ride my bike eleventy billion miles for Charity X
My Mark: Won't that be hard?
Me: Yes, I will suffer mightily.
My Mark: I'll pay to see that.  Shut up and take my money!

I'll note that these sorts of events are generally organized by the big-wigs themselves.  If Obama volunteered for this ice bucket challenge, I could see a problem in the future where he'd be deluged in 'challenges' and be forced to pick and chose which ones he submits to, with all the attendant wailing and gnashing of teeth.  It's kind of better to nip it in the bud and simply say 'no' now.

Donation wise I figure that there's a team involved in deciding what charities get how much each year, and it has a multi-month decision process.  Plus, well, any charity has be vetted and all that.

I know we don't like Obama, but I prefer to pick on him for his policies, not stuff that any president logically has to do.

A new twist on it is Charlie Sheen took the challenge with $10K and challenged John Cryer, Chuck Lorre and Ashton Kutcher to do the same.  The $10K was donated.

A good example is all the celebrities being invited to proms, balls etc.  After the first few got attention, it seemed like the internet was awash in requests.

I gotta say, the ice bucket challenge has reached a very high status in my IDGAF column.  Someone mentioned challenging me last night, and I told them it wasn't going to happen, nor do I care to give more money to ALS research, considering I'm being voluntold by the government to donate already.

My sister challenged me a couple of days ago. I've declined to respond. ALS is a worthy cause, but I despise chain letters, and that's what this is - "If you get this, you must do as it says and pass it on to X people!"
