Need shoes
« on: September 24, 2014, 11:46:28 AM »
I need a pair of office acceptable, biz casual type shoes.  Something along the lines of low top Dr Martens, Clarks, etc that would look good with Khakis.

Here's the problem:  I have problematic feets.  I have high arches and overpronation issues requiring a lot of support and stability control.  Otherwise, long stints walking on hard surfaces nearly cripple me.  Currently, I'm wearing my running shoes (Saucony Omni 12), which are perfect except they're rather garish like most running shoes these days.  I want something that supports my foot like the Omni 12s, but looks more appropriate when dressing like an adult.  Walking shoes tend to be more conservative in appearance, but don't look any better with slacks.

No, I won't wear combat boots.  No, I am not going to get cheap shoes from Wal-Mart.

I've tried orthotics, but I haven't found a set yet that provides enough support.

When I search for "motion control", "stability shoe", etc, I get nothing but athletic shoe hits.  I'm hoping some of you have ideas...

Chris

Hit the Redwing store. Might find a decent work shoe that provides the support you need without it looking all "combat boot-y."  A Redwing-only store will take the time to fit you properly and lots of their products are designed to be worn while standing on concrete all day long.

Can you tell if a shoe will work quickly or do you have to wear it a while?

Of course there are more work-boot-ish options at Redwing.  Lots of 6" boots look great with khakis.  Khakis & brown 6" Redwings was almost a uniform where my wife went to college.

I have these in black and brown: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B005UV0SL0/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I'm essentially archless with a high instep and wide foot at approx. 260lb, so I feel your (foot) pain.

I'm not against boots per se, just don't want surplus-store combat boots.  That said, my feet get hot if I wear boots any time other than late fall through early spring.  The Redwings look good, I'll check them out locally.  I generally have to wear shoes for a while to determine if they'll work or not, but I can tell pretty quickly if they're way far off.

Skechers?
Didn't work in the past.  Tried two different shoes.

I was hoping to avoid those.  They just scream "old man" to me.  Not that running shoes and khakis are any better...

I have moderate to high arches with a 9.5 4E foot and I am on my second pair of these:  http://www.zappos.com/rockport-main-route-northfield-dark-brown-leather

I have a hard time finding shoes that fit, but I've had good results with Rockport World Tour and ProWalker shoes.

I'm 41, what's your point. :P

In all seriousness, what I'm really looking for are shoes that are designed to provide stability support in the same manner as "motion control" running shoes.

You might take a look at something by Rockport, as Hank suggested. I have some of their chuckas and find them comfortable and supportive.

have you tried finding a speciality shoe store? most places seem to have at least one hole in the wall dedicated to such things.

Seems to me that you might need to be specially fitted for shoes, and require an expert.

The Rockports I've tried don't have Motion Control, which is what I need.

I know what kind of support I need, what I'm having trouble finding is that in a non-athletic shoe.  If I could get by with my running shoes in all situations, I would be set.  I was hoping it was just my google-fu and that someone else had seen such shoes before.

I'll give Redwings a try.  I haven't owned a pair before.

Keens mens shoes are on sale on Woot! today.

Generally a $125-180 boot for $45-65 right now.

http://sport.woot.com/offers/keen-mens-hiking-boots-your-choice

They really hold together well. They're not climbing Everest or go-to-war/z-poc boots, but they are hard-use hiking/camping quality. I have the sandals, and there the only brand my kids have never worn out or destroyed.

Go 1/2 size smaller than your normal size if you want to wear them sock-less. (They'll stand up to that, and can be tossed in the washing machine repeatedly)

I just sprung for the high-top Verdi II boot.
I promise not to duck.

I've had the same NB928's for less than 6 months and they are flat as a pancake inside after very little use ... they felt great when I first got them ... I shop the insole store for insoles for just about any shoes I buy ... they are not cheap but neither is a visit to a podiatrist ...

W/ a pair of these my feet are comfortable walking and standing in moccasins ... your may require something different.

Have you tried Docs? They are really supportive. Just do yourself a favor if you go the Doc route, pay the extra and get the Made in the UK version. Big difference in leather and build quality. I've worn pretty much nothing but Docs for the last 24 years or so. Dress shoes, sneakers and mules.

I had Docs years ago, but the last pair I bought didn't wear as well.

Yeah, very big difference between the Chinese vs. the U.K. produced shoes.
http://www.drmartens.com/us/Mens/Mens-Made-In-England/c/Mens-Made-In-England
My first pair of 8 hole steel toes lasted 14 years before the leather right behind the toe cap started cracking. My first and only pair of Chinese made shoes lasted a year and a half before the leather started breaking down. There's also another option; but you'd probably want to be discrete about it. Birkenstock makes shoes as well as their clogs and sandals. If you can get past the Hippy label, their products are high quality and unbelievably comfortable.
