Every Other Planet in the Solar System...

...fits between the Earth and Moon. That's a visual I'd never thought about before. The bastards left out Pluto. Weak.

That would seriously *expletive deleted*ck up tides.
If ye love wealth better than liberty, the tranquility of servitude better than the animating contest of freedom, go home from us in peace. We ask not your counsels or your arms. Crouch down and lick the hands which feed you. May your chains set lightly upon you, and may posterity forget that you were our countrymen.

Just think of the tidal heating.

http://www.planetaryexploration.net/jupiter/io/tidal_heating.html

I'll never forget the first time I observed the orbiting of the Galilean satellites.  It was like watching stuff swinging around a central object on gravitational "strings."  I almost went into astronomy, but the details were too complex for my 10 year old brain.

Still is, come to think of it.

I wouldn't worry too much about the tides.

The radiation that Jupiter and Saturn emit would cook us like soft boiled eggs.

Yeah, but unless we had a really fast orbit, I am not sure if we would die from radiation before falling into Jupiter.

Just try to figure up the orbital motion needed to keep them all from crashing into each other.

It can. I'm just still irate over Pluto being demoted. Damn kids and their newfangled terminology - get off my lawn!

That's it! That explains global warming. Have you looked up in the sky lately and seen some big things?

I suppose that if we let one planet in then we need to let them all in ...   ;/

It is much more powerful to seek Truth for one's self.  Seeing and hearing that others seem to have found it can be a motivation.  With me, I was drawn because of much error and bad judgment on my part. Confronting one's own errors and bad judgment is a very life altering situation.  Confronting the errors and bad judgment of others is usually hypocrisy.

According to a book I no longer have*, the first specially-designed electronic orrery calculated the orbits x million years back and forward with no substantial changes in orbits.  I believe its discussion was around p. 216 in the book.

From what I remember, even that one eventually became obsolete and was retired with a gold watch and a certificate of appreciation. (No kidding --that's what the book said.  Even had a picture of it with its gold watch. It's supposedly on display in the Smithsonian or the MIT Library or someplace like that --if the author isn't pulling a joke on his readers.)

Do you know what Star Trek and toilet paper have in common? They both hang around Uranus, wiping out Clingons!

Hell of a thing to become known as the loser of a planet instead of the finder.
