More background checks coming to Washington state
« on: October 30, 2014, 10:14:20 AM »
http://blog.seattlepi.com/seattlepolitics/2014/10/28/a-2-to-1-statewide-lead-for-initiative-594-in-kcts-9-washington-poll/#27672101=0

Those of us in Washington should be ready for the new requirement for background checks for all firearm sales and transfers.  It looks like a done deal, I think.

Disgusting but not surprising. Let's hope we can fight it in the courts. I'd really hate to have to move.

Still, don't lose all hope- who knows where these polls are taken and if they are accurate or disinformation.
The last bill we had like this was also predicted to win and it lost resoundingly.

Aren't half the people in WA from CA  ???

They rapidly learn not to mention it.

With a little bit of luck, perhaps the poll will get those inclined to support it to get complacent and stay home, while the 2A crowd will rally and vote in force. [/dreaming]

I pin my faint hopes on the fact every gun owner has a real vested interest on voting this down, and on the other side they are not nearly as motivated, except for a very small number of extremists. So hopefully a low turn out will favor our side.

All voting is by mail. So they don't need to "turn out" just draw a few lines and affix a stamp.

I still believe that the Marysville school shooting last week will sweep I-594 into law.  The polls were running closer to our side prior to that event.

Crap... please don't slide further into California-ness (and Hawaii-ness by extension).  I was looking forward to better firearms laws compared to Hawaii.

Perhaps not.  Should the election outcome remove some incumbents, there might be a chance to repeal those laws.

Pretty californicated in general, not just the gun laws.

There was a bunch of stuff in the bill about taxation , I did not decipher the legalese very well but it looked like they want to levy the use tax every time a privately owned firearm changes hands through the dealer. There is a lot of crap in that bill, pages and pages .
It is being sold as a background check, but it is really a registration scheme and a tool to discourage the gun culture.
So if it passes, are we gonna insist every gun buyback weapon has to go through a dealer? Alinsky the jerks and make them live up to their own law?

I have been dreading the outcome of the vote.  The anti-gun Seattle Times is publishing every anti-gun story it can find, and reading the comments on those articles is enough to drive one crazy.  There appear to be many people who have not read the actual initiative.  There are even more who clearly have never had positive exposure to guns.  Because guns are not a part of their lives, they see no "cost" aspect to the initiative.

And those people would not lift a finger should some official decide to lock up all those evil gun owners in concentration camps. Not joking.

One unexpected consequence of this law, should it pass, may be a lot more gun sales at the WAC shows- now they only allow private sales to members , who have to go through a background check -but if all sales go through a dealer, and they set up a low cost processing center at the shows, any one who comes to the show will be able to purchase with a nics check.
Hmmm- although there may be a delivery delay which would really make it complicated for private sellers to meet up with the buyer many days later.   Not sure on this, need to read the bill again.

It looks like 594 will pass and 591 will lose.   [barf]  I predict that the SAF will eventually get 594 overturned.

594 even passed in Spokane County. I guess grassroots can't compete with misinformation and lots of money from outside the state.   =(

Let's hope so, I really don't want to move to a new state again.

Edit: ugh, lost badly too, almost %20.
