Believing (for good or bad reasons) that gov't statistics are skewed and untrustworthy, does not imply that better exists.

Yes, the crime statistic methods are flawed, but they're flawed in known ways. If one measured crime using the same method over the years, and it demonstrated a decline, year over year, then it's likely there is a decline (unless you believe crime statistics are actually totally impossible, because the government in the US totally cannot be trusted).
Further you'd need to believe that all the industrialized countries conspired together to simultaneously fake declining crime (whereas for some reason, the same governments were not faking it before).
