From what I have read, they are not particularly apocalyptic, just small-o orthodox in their Islam.  They have the authority of their scripture to buffer their claims.  And if they keep on succeeding, they will be seen as strong and get more backing.

The arguments for their apocalyptic view are pretty persuasive. Their own slick propaganda magazine is called "Dabiq" which is the town in Syria that is the Islamic (Sunni?) counterpart to the field or battle of Armageddon.

And it does neatly explain their penchant for poking bears and making enemies or more appropriately enraging enemies even further faster than they can bolster their combat abilities.

They don't have an air force. They don't have any significant armor assets. These are a bunch of guys in Toyota Hiluxes who have made the gains they have because they're willing to scare local populations into submission without a fight through the beheadings and executions and ISIS isn't really that exceptional, the power vacuum they've moved into is what was exceptional.

Strategically, what ISIS is doing is how a non-rational actor would look.
I promise not to duck.

Yep, Dabiq is their Armageddon.  In which they initially defeat the west.  Then the Anti-Messiah comes and kills all but 5,000 fighters who end up defending Jerusalem when the first second coming of Christ happens and leads them to victory over all the earth.

Which is why losses don't have any effect on their morale, it was already pre-ordained that many would be killed in the final battle.

They are most definitely apocalyptic and really don't care about much as everything points toward their "gospel truth".

With the burnings happening within five miles of Al Asad airbase,  it almost seems like they're trying to bait us into turning those Marines loose.

If the US withdrew completely, and disengaged completely from that part of the world (assuming we could meet our oil/energy needs without Gulf oil), what would happen?  I mean, apart from Lindsay Graham and John McCain, and the Israel lobby having strokes, of course.

Either a Caliphate is established, which would not please Turkey, Iran, or Israel, or one or more state actors would step in and intervene, and stick to tar baby.  In either event, the EU has FAR more at stake than do we.  Let them deal with it, or not, as they choose.

They would do everything they can to draw us back in.  They want the big battle on the plains of Dabiq.  With us. And anyone else that wants to join us.  They want Armageddon.  They are "true believers" and will do whatever it takes to have the "prophecy" fulfilled.

Which is why I predict at some point we* will have to nuke Raqqa and Dabiq, just like we did Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

If there really was intelligent life on other planets, we'd be sending them foreign aid.

Conservatives see George Orwell's "1984" as a cautionary tale.  Progressives view it as a "how to" manual.

Why does it look like anytime they're not wearing jihadi pj's,  ISIS regulars seem to be dressed in MARPAT?  Stuff we gave em?

I'm guessing stuff they took from the Iraqi's when they overran various towns and installations.

Yep. Even before ISIS, was really common for coward IPs / IAs to get their *expletive deleted*it snatched.

Real fun to start taking fire from a "checkpoint" you're rollin through.

Does this mean that Boko Haram defeats are relevant to this thread as well? =D

I'm more concerned with the number of people they murder along the way.

This, plus the destruction at Nimrud et al. make the drumbeat of ISIS' impending defeat rather Pyrrhic. The longer they exist, the more civilization loses.
