I still use a nail to punch holes in my paint can gutter-deal.

Damn straight. It's incredible how well that works. I also stretch a rubber band around the can so that the band serves as a very convenient scraper. It drops the paint right back into the can, and you don't have to worry about it not all draining back through the nail holes.
