New Rules for LEOs Getting Military Gear
« on: May 18, 2015, 10:47:48 AM »
I was all set to say "Hurray Obama admin - you did something good!". Then I read the story and saw he made a practically Republican move with the whole, "Here's what we're doing (and here are all the exceptions)."

No tracked vehicles, but up-armored wheeled vehicles are still okie-dokie. No firearms or ammo .50cal or larger, but M-4s by the boatload are still good to go. No camo uniforms. Wow.

I guess on the bright side, it's a start at least.

I want to see it changed to "only" tracked vehicles.  No way they will keep up with the maintenance.

Good point. You can see that a lot with the helos. A lot of these local agencies have no idea what it costs to maintain a 212 until they get one "for free!".

Ha, the maintenance on the MRAP's won't be easy or cheap either.

We should have CMP 50 cal machine guns IMO.

Personally, I don't see an issue with selling grenade launchers.  They could still restrict the explosive shells.

Not even a start to addressing the issues.

I would pay money to watch a bunch of cops break track on a 113 or Bradley.

Hell, I'd pay to watch them try to use bayonets without stabbing each other.

Confronting one's own errors and bad judgment is a very life altering situation.  Confronting the errors and bad judgment of others is usually hypocrisy.

So to sum up Obama's action, other then "No tracked vehicles", it's really no change, and you'll now have by your camo either on line or at a surplus store like everyone else...

I was going to say that but I think there was a touch of sarcasm in his post.

Ooops.  I knew it surprised me the first time I started mine up.

In other news, like I said when this first became an issue, the issue is not the equipment.  It is the training, mindset, and permissive legal climate.  They can still get most (if not all) of this same equipment from the vendor.  The only difference is instead of getting a free USGI surplus M4 they are paying LEO pricing for a new one from FN.  Or what have you.

Frankly, as taxpayers we should probably be demanding that cops use surplus gear because it will save money.  But if people want to see a change in the way police operate, something besides the source of their equipment will have to change.

I like the cops having M4s, at least. They can't be horrible weapons of war that don't belong on our streets, if Officer Friendly keeps one in the trunk.

This is very true. I would just like to see both the surplus, and newly purchased gear, be something reasonable for dealing with US citizens, versus the "enemy combatant" mindset when they put their gear wishlists together.
