Shiner beer
« on: May 26, 2015, 09:16:14 PM »
Surprisingly meh.

Got the variety pack.  All were meh except for the grapefruit beer which was undrinkable.

Better than budwieser.  Not better than anything brewed by sam adams.

Will not buy again unless the other options are "no beer" or "bud swill."

Yeah, I don't get the love for Shiner Beer either.  The Bock is ok, but there are much better options anywhere that would have Shiner.

I like Shiner Bock.

I PREFER Steelhead Lager, but that it's generally hard as hell to find and just insanely expensive in Virginia.

Hum... Looks like it was Double India Pale Ale, not a Lager.

They had one beer I thought was good, and it wasn't the bock. The bock is not bad if you let it warm up a bit, but it's not cheap enough for what it is. In certain markets AB sells a knockoff called Ziegenbock or something and it's cheaper and just as good.
Maybe a rare occurence, but then you only have to get murdered once to ruin your whole day.

Had Shiner Bock on tap at my favorite local dive bar recently. It was terrible. However, I don't know if that's how it is supposed to taste or if it's just such a slow seller around here that it turned.

Oh yeah, I forgot about that one.  It's pretty decent.  Hard to find though, I've only seen it once.

I find Shiner to be okay.  Not great, not horribly bad, just 'okay'.  It's not on my list of beers to keep on hand.

If you can get it in your area, Schell Bock is way better than Shiner.

You can all go to hell.  I'll go to Texas.

I like the white wing, oktoberfest and the spring beer they have sometimes (FM 966 I think).  The dark one too.

I don't normally do flavored beers.

Shiner Bock and Black Lager are pretty good - their seasonal Chocolate Stout is OK for a change of pace. Strongly suggest avoiding their Prickly Pear beer.

. . .  Not better than anything brewed by sam adams.
That is so wrong - Sam Adams' Cherry Wheat and Cranberry Lambic beers are just plain nasty.  [barf]

I would not call Shiner terrible.  I suspect funky / skunky draft beer complications.

Have not had those and will take your word for it.  I consider most the Sam Adams line of traditional beer variants to be roughly middling for each variant.  Except the scotch ale, which I though better than average and worth picking up.

I am not a big fan of fruity beer, white beer, or wheat beer and avoid them.

I've never been a big fan of Sam Adams beer...

Sam Adams has suffered from the surfeit of good American beers to come along the last 20 years.  Twenty years ago or so, when it first hit the scene big, it was so much better than Busch/Miller/etc. it is hard to describe.  Finding it on tap was a "woo-hoo" moment.  Not so much anymore.  Still OK IMO, but many more and better options are available.

Lambics in general are nasty.  Being Sam Adams makes it all the worse.

Me neither.  SA uses some ingredient or yeast that gives all of their beers an odd taste to my palate.  I don't like any of them as a result.  I'd rather have a PBR or High Life.

Generally it's my go to beer.  I don't go out of my way for craft beers.
Beer that I just can't drink....bud.  Can't.  It's just nasty to me.  I'll drink other pilsners from time to time but bud just makes me  [barf]

Agreed. Bud is just awful.

PBR is OK if it's really cold, otherwise it's swill.

I really enjoy Coors, Coors Light, and Miller Light as general drinking beers.

Sierra Nevada and Old Dominion are nice, occasionally, as well.

Or if your dive doesn't clean its lines and taps properly.

Also a possibility. The stuff they have that sells out quickly and gets rotated to a new style seems to taste clean though.

Sam Adams house yeast has a pretty distinctive flavor and they use it in almost all of their beers.
