A British historian recounts the Great War
« on: November 04, 2006, 09:05:24 PM »
I am about finished with a condensed version of Trevelyan's History of England, and I found a few quotations that might make for good conversation.

Quote
The year 1918 would see the gradual arrival in France of the armies now being raised and drilled in America.  If Germany had been wise she would have negotiated for a tolerable peace before they arrived.

Quote
The old Continental saying that the English only win one battle in a war, and that is the last one, has a certain verisimilitude in the light of the events of August to November 1918.

The first aroused my chauvinism, the second just seemed amusing.  Love the Brits.

Typically British: presumptuous, self-aggrandizing, deluded, and oddly amusing. Wu-rrright.
