When did this happen? If you have any info on it I'd like to see it.
--BTW I am not doubting you, I am curious about what happened and would like to learn more about it.
Wikipedia has the majority of the details.
First, Clark wanted to invade Kosovo ahead of international agreements. Granted, Russia was invading ahead of schedule because Slavic racial solidarity and took the airport. A British general drank with the Russian general, which naturally smoothed over the bad relations. Naturally, Clark was furious at things working out and going smoothly, thus furiously tried to piss off Russia or start a war by blockading them. British general told him to go have relations with himself. General Shelton fired Clark and everyone rejoiced.
That's the public story. And is true. Wesley Clark through incompetence or glory seeking tried to get the British to antagonize or start a shooting war with Russia, while he was safely out of harm's way down in FYROM. Because it'd make a better book or he figured it was a shoe in for the Presidency or who knows what. Clark could given Marcus Crassus lessons on ego, glory seeking and incompetency.
If you read the official entry carefully, you'll notice that for all the shenanigans at the airport, it doesn't mention the Russians being at the airport, right? Because they weren't at the airport, they were across the street. Fire up Google Maps and slap in "Pristina Airport". Look slightly to the west. Notice some oddly straight roads that seem to go... nowhere? Well, not quite.
Yeah, that's an underground Cold War era air base. Inside that hill. The British had no chance of rooting the VDV out of that facility. Yugoslavia built it back in the day. Maybe. That facility is what the Russians seized and occupied. Honestly have no idea why. Could be it had something they wanted, could be they just knew it was a very secure location next to the only major airfield in Kosovo. They might have been willing to start WW3 over it, or maybe they were just rushing to defend their Slavic brothers. No one aside from the Russians know, as far as I've been able to figure out.
