The Guardian has the scoop:

LIVE ammunition has been found lying in the doorway of a busy high street shop.

The .22 calibre short round bullet was found at the entrance of the 99p Stores in Walthamstow High Street on Wednesday morning, November 1.

Haroon Khan, who has a firearms licence and is a member of a local gun club, was alarmed to discover live ammunition in a Walthamstow doorway.

The bullet, of Swiss origin, was still in its brass casing, complete with enough gunpowder for it to fire itself.

Mr Khan said that if it had been struck hard enough or exposed to heat it could have gone off.

How much gunpowder does a bullet need before it will fire itself?  Good thing I'm not a hand-loader.

Until a year or two ago, they were still shot in rapid fire matches: their noticeably lighter recoil let shooters get back on target quicker.

I think they should take that round, set it on a table and then all sit around it and wait for it to fire itself. That should keep them out of trouble for a while.

Well, did the bobbies cordon off the area and bring in an EOD squad and hazmat team?

Has psychological counseling been provided to those who may have heard about - or even possibly seen the object in question?

Well, I'm a handloader, but I'm going on strike. If a bullet can fire itself with enough gunpowder, it can get off its lazy butt and reload itself when its out of powder.

Mr. Khan should receive a medal for his vigilance.  You've got to watch out for those kinds that can fire themselves.  Especially the .22, which would have ricocheted until it killed all of its intended targets.
