When I want one I ask for a diet coke. Sometimes the waiter or waitress will say "Is diet pepsi ok?" Neither I nor any of my friends have ever called it pop  :?

Around this section of Utah, it's called "Pop" almost exclusively. That's what I've always called it. Elsewhere in Utah it is about 50/50 "Soda" or "Pop." You will hear "Sodapop" a lot around here too.

Regardless, people will know what you want if you call it any of the above.

Now, for true pop connoiseurs like myself cheesy , you can call specific drinks their street names, like "Dew" or "Pepper."  Wink

Well i'm from Michigan so it's pop, but after four years in the south it's turned into soda sometimes and pop most of the time.

It's POP!
The only people I ever knew that called it "soda" were my prissy big-city cousins from the south.  They wore shiney shoes and drank with their pinky fingers bent.

I can understand people calling it "coke" because that's what you actually HAD most of the time you decided you were going to have a bottle of pop.  However, I really liked my root beer as well and that simply isn't "coke".

It's pop, damn it ... but I've been out here on the Left Coast so long, I slip occasionally and have used the S-word ... when I take the kids back to Michigan, they can't get used to calling it "pop" ...

Steve,
You gonna have some moon pie with that RC? Cheesy

Being from Meechigan, it's pop to me.  My "trunky" neighbors are from around the Chicago area and they call it soda.  They also call a pontoon boat a flote boat.  I really love the different dialects from around da US of A., eh?

Mom grew up in WV, and she calls it pop.  I call it coke.  My siblings call it both.

Amen to that, brother.

That's reason enough to never call it soda!

I hate this question too.  While Coke is the standard who can really tell the difference?  Answer:  NOBODY

Generally, I too follow the pop.

But since all I drink is Coke and Dr. Pepper, it is usually 'Coke' or 'Dr. Pepper'
I still say 'Give Detroit to Canada'

Everyone I know calls it "Coke," unless they (like I) prefer Dr. Pepper.  Wouldn't you like to be a pepper too?

Plus one

I've lived in Texas all my life, it is coke.

"coke please"
"what kind?"

I have always thought it was kind of funny, but haven't ever called it anything else and make fun of those who do. cheesy

Also Coke just came out with a Coke with lime!!!!!!!  woohoo.  I was so excited when I found out.

Wow. That's cool.

You know, Pepsi must really be perturbed to no end about the numbers of people who call all sodapop "coke".
What if the hokey pokey is really what it's all about?

We call em "soft drinks".

Otherwise we them specifically by name (coke, pepsi, sprite etc).

However, when all else fails it's "pop". I say "soda" just to mess with people.

Well here in Missouri you will hear mostly pop from the KC side of the state, soda from the St Louis side of the state and variations there of mixed in.  Myself ... I've called it about everything.
Hah! just checked that map out, which sorta supports what I just said. cheesy

That is cool.

Gives a whole new meaning to RED and BLUE states.

Oh, I live in a dark red county on the East Central University map.

Where I'm from, if you call it anything other than "coke", you get strange looks from people...   rolleyes   If you call it "soda", the looks aren't so bad, but if you call it "pop", someone might actually call you on it.

I call it "coke" whether it's Coke, Dr. Pepper, Pepsi, Sprite or whatever.

Most of the folks I know who're native Texans call all carbonated sugar water  drinks "Coke".  My dad and some of his generation mostly called it a soda-water, as did my grandparents.  Or sodie-water.  Pronounced so-dee, in case there's any confusion.  I've also heard cold-drink and co'cola fairly often.  As I said, though, nowadays it's mostly Coke.

Coke. Even if the fast food joint yer in only has Pepsi, you ask for a Coke. "I believe I'm gonna have a Coke. Uhhhh... Mountain Dew" Soda is acceptable but any mention of "pop" will get you sent back North. "Soda pop" is alright, as long as you have an authentic Prospector accent and pronounce it "sodE pop".
