When I was growing up it was 'soda'. Now that I'm somewhat grown up, it's 'barley pop'...

I grew up in Milwaukee using the term "soda", and moved to Michigan where it is referred to as "pop".  I refer to it now as "sugar water".  Does anyone here remember the term "phosphate"?  It was used in the "soda fountain" days when they mixed various syrups with carbonated water and served the drink in a conical paper cup with crushed ice.

I grew up (long time ago) in Wisconsin, so I always asked for "a bottle of pop."
Your choices were Coke, Root Beer, Cream Soda, and then a string of Grape/Cherry/Orange drinks that were so sticky-sweet you could use them for hummingbird food.

And yes, you could buy a phosphate at the soda fountain in the local drug store.

My kids grew up in California so they look for "a can of soda".

My grandson, the soccer fiend, tracks down a "sports drink",
and my Grandaughter, Miss Priss, requests "Juice, please."

Pop.  Coke is a brand name.  Soda is something some people choose to mix with scotch.

In the south its a coke, regardless.  If you are from an earlier generation its a dope.

Smoke break is where one consumes a dope and nabs unless you favor an RC and Moonpie.

But what happened to my poll (graphic)?

Is it only up for a certain length of time? Or are polls no longer allowed on ACP?

In Texas, it's "Coke", irregardless of what you pull out of the cooler.

"Wanna Coke?"

    "Sure"

"Whut kind?"

    "Dr. Pepper".

'pop' and 'soda' are Yankee connotations. Sometimes it's referred to as 'sody water' in other places around the South.
