See that great mass of soda-ers centered on St Louis?  fistful has to be implicated in this in some fashion.

And then there is the Indiana Coke Incusion.  Old commenter esheato probably would blamed the hilljacks he decried on a regular basis.

esheato? I think it was El Tejon.

But, yeah, soda reigns here. What can I say? We have that bi-coastal sophistication, or something, I don't know. The map seems a bit off to me. My Dad's family, up in the northern reaches of the state all say "pop." Or they used to, I think.

"Coke" as a generic term never made much sense to me. But then, Coke as a cola never made sense, either. Awful excuse for a soft drink...

How come no "sody-pop" variable?
WHATEVER YOUR DEFINITION OF "INFRINGE " IS, YOU SHOULDN'T BE DOING IT.

Growing up in WI, I knew of the terminology difference between Soda (WI) and pop (used by FIBs), but I didn't think the dividing line was that distinct between WI and IL.

If you'll note, it's not just Missouri. I grew up in one of the many Illinois counties included in the "Soda" island. If you'll note, Illinois has all three, split North, Mid, and South.

(Therefore, it's "soda". Not "pop", that's a sound, you northern hicks, and not "Coke" that's a specific product, southrons.  :P)

Where I'm from, the other side of the state and across the state line, it is pop.

Kind of surprised that Texas is Coke and not Dr. Pepper.

It's simple: they drink Dr. Pepper, but call it "Coke".

Me: I want a Coke?

Wait Staff: Pepsi ok?

Me: No, if I wanted a Pepsi I would've asked for a Pepsi.

When I was a kid, my best friend's family came from Michigan, and they would always say "pop" when I was at their house, even though CA is strongly "soda". That is the only place I can actually recall hearing something other than soda. Even when I used to travel a lot for work, and was in "pop" and "coke" regions,  I can't recall hearing either of those words, or "soda" for that matter. Any soda related talk was along the lines of, "Can I get you something to drink?" "Yeah, I'll have a [name of beverage]."

Though I very rarely drink soda anymore, when I do, or did, I've never referred to it as soda, but always to the brand name of whatever I was drinking.

I believe, "cultured" is the word you're looking for.  =D

Is that the part of Illinois that roots for the Cardinals?

I would assume so. I am from the part where I believe the divide occurs as about half my friends rooted for the Cubs and the other half for the Cardinals.

As an insight into my personality: I've been a Cardinal fan for as long as I've cared about sports. I picked the Cardinals because my best friend (at age 6) was a Cub fan.

Another interesting tidbit: All these girls are from my hometown. (One is the sister of a classmate.)

I wish the Ring had never come to me. I wish none of this had happened.

In WI, 'soda' is only used in the 'coastal' counties to about 30 miles inland. Grew up where it was 'pop', I live 100 miles from my home town on its 'soda.'

I had a great time as a kid for a few years growing up in an all(1) Roman Catholic Polish/Italian neighborhood.  Only way it could have been better would have been easy access to woods nearby.  Lived lots of places as a kid growing up and that was the best.  All due to the folks who lived there.
