Akbar gets death
« on: November 23, 2006, 06:09:14 PM »
The death sentence for convicted murderer Sgt. Hasan Akbar was approved late last week at Fort Bragg, N.C., by Lt. Gen. John R. Vines, commander if XXVIII Airborne Corps and court martial convening authority in the case.

Akbar was sentenced to death in April 2005 by unanimous vote of a military panel for the March 23, 2003, grenade attack that killed Capt. Christopher Seifert and Maj. Gregory Stone.

The grenade attack, which also wounded 14 others, took place at Camp Pennsylvania in Kuwait, where the 1st Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division, was preparing to cross the berm into Iraq.

Akbar lobbed grenades into three tents while members of the brigade slept, and then fired shots at those who emerged from the smoky blasts.

Approval of the death penalty means that Akbars case will automatically go to appeal and be reviewed by the U.S. Army Court of Criminal Appeals, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Armed Forces, and ultimately could end up at the U.S. Supreme Court.

He cant be executed until the president gives a firm OK, said military law expert Eugene Fidell, who is not involved in the Akbar case.

However, he added, Akbars case will likely be in appeals for some time to come.

Experience teaches that this case will not be over while Mr. Bush is in office, Fidell said.

Execute the sentence as quickly as possible, before the media make a circus out of it.

During WW II, this sentence would have been carried out summarily.

I believe he will be pardoned by the incoming democratic president.

I doubt he'll get pardoned, but if he did it wouldn't likely extend his lifespan by much.

I'd say that a pardon is far more likely to shorten his life than prolong it.  Lets not forget about that free medical care and bars to keep away the rightiously vengefull.

Even a Democrat President wouldn't be dumb enough to pardon him-anyone doing that might as well have a "double-capacity gallows" built.

Only a truly principled President, who truly opposed against the death penalty and everything it stood for, would pardon him, all the while knowing that most of America and even his own party would denounce him, and that his re-election (or legacy, for a 2nd termer), would be destroyed.

Even Reagan and Carter, both very principled in their beliefs (whether you agree with them or not) bowed to the political inevitable.

So, no, it ain't gonna happen.

Execute the scum.
+1.  And no lethal injection either.  Long drop w/ a short rope or firing squad only.  Betrayal of comrades in arms warrants little else.

Whats wrong with Akbar?  Frankly when I read the title of this thread I thought it was about Akbar and Jeff from the strip Life in Hell.

Oh, I don't know.  Just that it's part of the slogan the terrorist scream before they kill people.  I'd never sell a firearm to someon named Akbar, let alone let them join the military.

It is also a given name, such this fellow has. http://www.engr.wisc.edu/ece/faculty/sayeed_akbar.html

No, I don't know him.  Just from a quick Google search.

They all do that now. During the Clinton years I wasn't paying enough attention to politics to notice if they did it to him. Anyone remember?

It's an incredibly common name in the Arab world. Allah Akhbar literally means "God is the greatest". Yes, terrorists say it, but that's like associating "Praise Jesus!" with Fred Phelps or his ilk instead of Christianity as a whole.

I wouldn't give grenades to someone who called themselves "Praise Jesus," either!
