You don't hold a person hostage for 4 years and never communicate any ransom demands.

This is more like kidnapping and robbery, not a hostage issue.

Abuse of the elderly is a significant problem in this country, brought on by the incredibly selfish and anti-natalist attitudes that started with the baby boomers. Soon they'll be getting put in homes themselves and reaping what they've sown.

What was the prior relationship of the two individuals?

It would seem apparent that the Marine had no family that was missing him?
