If all the ice melted from the South Pole, although it seems to be accumulating, oceans level may be affected by some amount.
North pole ice  is already floating, displacing its own weight. If it were to melt there would be NO change in sea level.
If all the ice melted at the South Pole, that would mean Antarctica would be habitable also.  That would be interesting.  My current house would be underwater at that point though.

Lake Vostok is under 3700 meters of ice. That there is climate change.

Looking at the graph I posted at

http://www.armedpolitesociety.com/index.php?topic=54033.msg1100187#msg1100187

it looks like the actual long-term average of global temperature is about 5 - 6 degrees less than the baseline we are at now.

To this old regression-line watcher, we are already at a high point in global temps and are heading into another Grand Ice Age.

It sure as hell has saved me a lot of money that I would have otherwise paid out in fuel oil to heat my Mother's house, so I'm very happy with it this year.

That and CO2 was heading toward an all time low in which plant life would have struggled.  Human activity reversed that trend.

Bring it on!  80+ degrees on Feb 28 isn't right.

No! Why should we feel guilty for enjoying the weather?!

Nobody said you should feel guilty for enjoying warm weather.

What people should feel guilty about is proclaiming we're heading into a sudden jump in global temperatures when the long-term evidence plainly shows that such a conclusion can not be drawn from a short-term sample of 200 years.

Even an amateur can see this.

It's as fistful pointed out, "The temperatures have dropped about 10 degrees F since 9 o'clock this morning. At this rate, we will hit absolute zero in about a week. WE'RE DOOMED!!"

The clue is in "at this rate."

At this rate as of that morning.

Or this year.

Or even the last two centuries.

Look again at the four hundred thousand year record and tell me again where the temperature is heading this morning.  Call me in 50,000 years and let me know what you found.

What they're trying to tell you is based on the second attachment, the last couple of hundred years shown in the overall graph of the first attachment.

It's called "lying by omission of facts."

Steady on, old boy. No need to bite off the new guy's head.

Why do you say I was biting off his head?  I just took his comment as a takeoff point for my little rant on the scientists who make predictions based on a highly pre-selected sample, instead of looking at the whole data set.

If you took offense, shellyd, I did not intend to "bite off your head."

And welcome aboard.

Holly Crap! It was in the 80s here yesterday and only 40° F this morning at that rate we'll all be dead in time for it to be on the 10:00 PM news!!!

In the Greater Ferguson Metrolplex [sic], we are currently enjoying a Global Cooling. The temperatures have dropped about 10 degrees F since 9 o'clock this morning. At this rate, we will hit absolute zero in about a week. WE'RE DOOMED!!

I make that five days and six hours, fistful, if my arithmetic is correct.  A little bit shy of "about a week."

Shame on you for your sloppy science.

That puts absolute zero occurring at about 6 PM tonight, your time, in Beautiful Downtown Ferguson.

If my projection is correct.

So when will the reverse Hurricane start to suck very low pressure cold air down into the high pressure warm air?  I just want to know so I am not in an aircraft or something like that.

I thought all the tundra areas were not thin soils at all.  At least that is what I gathered from the stories about the US Army trying to build the road to Alaska.  I imagine there are plenty of areas that fit your description.

The interesting thing to think about also is how much good farmland has had suburbs built over the top of it around major cities.  A lot of the suburbs on the West side of Houston fit that description.  Different topic I guess.

You are correct, not all the artic soils are not poorly developed thin soils over bedrock, I was being really general. The low areas tend to fill with the erosion carried sediment and that is the muck they talk about in the Alcan highway. Due to the extreme cold much of that soil is heavy with partially decomposed organic matter, weathered minerals & sands and poorly developed clays and silts. Most of the soils you are going to find in the artic areas are going to be Inceptisols, Histosols and Gelisols. Maybe some Andisols due to past volcanic activities. Its a relatively young era in terms of soil formation, glaciers did retreat 8-10k years ago and the cold climate hasn't allowed for more mature soils to form.

Not at all like the really productive Mollisols and Alfisols you find in the corn belt.

We've been bouncing around lately: 67 degrees one Saturday, and 30 degrees the next. Every time it warms up, people tell each other that winter is over. It's snowed a couple of times in the past few days. Nothing much, but boy are people getting cranky about it.

Around here it seems like the global warming can't make up its own mind whether it's real or not.
If there really was intelligent life on other planets, we'd be sending them foreign aid.

Conservatives see George Orwell's "1984" as a cautionary tale.  Progressives view it as a "how to" manual.

My wife often says to me, "You are evil and must be destroyed." She may be right.

Liberals believe one should never let reason, logic and facts get in the way of a good emotional argument.

You might want to set that up on your speed-dial.

With the present population of 7,491,692,668 and a growth rate of about 1.11%  per year, that's what phone numbers will look like in 50K years.

3.803249people by then. If my arithmetic is correct.

Of course, this is only a projection based on this year's data. :D
