There was something like that in or near White Plains, NY, several years ago. A gasoline tanker lost control and crashed into the supporting abutment for an overpass above one of the interstates. He hit the abutment in the median. Truck caught fire, and basically melted the bridge.

Holy heck they do have heavy traffic.  My question is do they ever not have heavy traffic?

Report I listened to over night said it could take more than 6 months to get it back in service.
It can be done faster

No according to Wikipedia:
Quote
Georgia banned "sanctuary cities" in 2009, and in 2016 went further by requiring local governments, in order to obtain state funding, to certify that they cooperate with federal immigration officials

I go to Atlanta at least once a month, and have been for four years. I have a theory. Nobody in Atlanta actually has a home. They drive 24 hours a day. They stop for gas and food, and then start driving the interstate around the city again.

No matter what hour of the day or night I drive there, it's always nuts. I asked someone about the traffic, and he said, "well, Atlanta has three different interstates (85, 75 and 20) coming together)". Chicago has seven converging on the city, and Chicago traffic isn't as bad as Atlanta's. And Atlanta's pavement is much, much better than Chicago's, and doesn't have the constant construction.

Hmmm. . . road trouble in Atlanta, could take a LONG time to sort out.

So . . . in order to facilitate traditional thread drift . . . a while back, I read that Atlanta was filing suit against some suburbs seeking to "disincorporate" them so they could then annex - AND TAX! - the residents. Never heard more about it, but at the time, Atlanta's leaders were claiming it would be "racist" not to allow them to annex and grab money from other communities.

Think they'll somehow try to use the expense of this road disaster as an excuse to begin agitating for annexation again?

Happened in Virginia some years ago, and also happened near where I grew up in Pennsylvania a couple of years ago. Really caused problems in both cases.

I remember several years back when a barge got loose on the Arkansas River and crashed into a bridge in Oklahoma and brought it down.  A few lives were lost in that tragedy.
There are five things, above all else, that make life worth living: a good relationship with God, a good woman, good health, good friends, and a good cigar.

If they make it a priority, it won't be near that long.  The question in my mind is how much damage did the fire do to other parts of the bridge.

I heard some commentary on the radio this morning.  They asked where everyone goes to the bathroom while they are stuck on the highway for hours at a time?  I imagine there were a lot of personal emergencies people had to deal with.

Yes, if they can.

DFW has 20, 30 and then 35 splits so both cities can have its misery, (plus loops 820 and 635) and yet only 35W north of FW and 35E in downtown Dallas are anywhere near Atlanta's level of mess.

Chicago has mostly mid-westerners driving on its interstates. Atlanta has mostly Georgians.

There are other forces at work in this world, Frodo, besides the will of evil. Bilbo was meant to find the Ring. In which case, you also were meant to have it. And that is an encouraging thought

This is something St. Louis (a city which is also a county) keeps trying to do with St. Louis County (the county from which the city seceded in the 1870s).

The small town in live outside of has made comments about annexing the area I live in. They have nothing to offer my neighborhood except additional taxes. We've had to remind them they don't really want us involved in city business. So far that's been enough.

Looks like they have arrested three transients for setting the fire. So far they have only released their first names; William, Tecumseh and Sherman.   ;)
