State Line Marker
« on: August 15, 2017, 07:01:47 PM »
I was just going through images from my last road trip that included the state boundary marker below. I'd not seen this type before, plus this one was off a little dirt road well away from normal traffic to mark the Idaho/Montana border. I thought some might find it interesting. I geek out on this kinda stuff. :)

Coords:  48° 40.193'N, 116° 2.948'W

"Coords:  48° 40.193'N, 116° 2.948'W"

Did you get that from what looks like a geo survey marker on top, or did you GPS that?

I geek out on stuff like that, e.g.:

I was fascinated by the fact that "Baseline Road" up in Boulder, which was supposed to be the exact 40° baseline from Lincoln NE for survey and legal description purposes, is actually off by about 30(?) feet.  The original survey back in the day was inaccurate.

Neither.  I neglected to mark it when I took the pic so just guestimated off google earth. Though looking closer, I think I was actually at  48° 40.493'N, 116° 2.948'W as I think I was driving down from Herman Lake when I spotted it up off the road.

I'm guessing not much before 1890.

Hum... Looking at it more closely, it looks as if it may be concrete. I was thinking it was carved stone.

If concrete, later.

If carved stone, earlier.

Likely a replacement for an earlier/original that was vandalised or stolen.
If ye love wealth better than liberty, the tranquility of servitude better than the animating contest of freedom, go home from us in peace. We ask not your counsels or your arms. Crouch down and lick the hands which feed you. May your chains set lightly upon you, and may posterity forget that you were our countrymen.

In any case, probably not before the state was founded.

Oh crap, Idaho entered the union in 1890.

I don't know why I thought it entered in the late 1860s.

here's one one on the North Carolina - Virginia border.  Not my picture, it's from a geocache page.  coordinates are

N 36° 33.036 W 076° 22.609

I heard it was erected by a group of Konfederate Klan Republicans, in 1848. The actual work was done by the persons of color they "owned" as slaves.

This is one of the original 1792 DC boundary markers.

I've seen a bunch of them over the years.
