OK, here's what really ticks me off about the Honorable Senator Robert Byrd:
Most people don't know that he was (or maybe still is) a member of the Klan.
Most folks figure that it was Republicans like Strom Thurmond who were the racists.
Thurmond died within days of another Southerner, Lester Maddox. Maddox always had a baseball bat with him, which he displayed proudly, along with this sign stating "we have the right to refuse service to anyone."
Well, Thurmond was a Republican, and so he got the media lashings even as his funeral went on.
But, wait...Lester Maddox, who publicly challenged blacks to enter his restaurant, and who did so while holding his baseball bat, was a Democrat.
How many people who read the newspaper stories about Thurmond's death knew he was a Republican, versus the number of people who knew that Maddox was a Democrat?
The answer is easy.
