Jeeze, there's so much funny in this thread...
"In a National Review column, David French jokingly referred to her as 'the Jackie Robinson of lactating lawyers.'"
I imagine the actual Indians dislike people lying about Indian heritage more than anyone else.
...
Yeah, like "Stolen Valor."
This whole thing about American Indian ancestry is very interesting, and reminded me of the "Ward Churchill" flap.
While he, Churchill, was fired from the University of Colorado faculty because of academic improprieties, a side issue on that dust-up was whether he had misrepresented his American Indian ancestry:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ward_Churchill#Genealogy_and_Tribal_affiliationOne of the significant points to me was:
Documents in Churchill's university personnel file show that he was granted tenure in a "special opportunity position." In 1994, then CU-Boulder Chancellor James Corbridge refused to take action on allegations that Churchill was fraudulently claiming to be an Indian, saying "it has always been university policy that a person's race or ethnicity is self-proving."
Sooo, if I say I'm Native American and seek special treatment, who can say nay? I just proved it by saying it.
The issue was more complicated than that in the Ward Churchill case, but I thought it was fascinating that a high-level academic (or his institution) could just accept someone's word that they deserved special treatment because of their special ethnicity.
Heh. Maybe the Tribes ought to issue Challenge Coins or something.
