Return of the Ruger PC9
« on: December 28, 2017, 10:02:28 PM »
Looks like Ruger has revived and updated the PC9 9mm carbine.

http://www.thefirearmblog.com/blog/2017/12/28/new-release-ruger-pc-carbine-9mm/

I can see the meeting now.

“PCCs are hot again. We have a solid if unexciting design. What can we do to update it for the current market?”

Integrated rail for scope / red dot. Check.

Forward section of rail for light/laser. Check.

Change magwell to take current Ruger SR series mags. Check.

Redesign magwell to allow a modular design that can be easily changed out for other magazines. Check.

Go ahead and include a Glock magwell module. Check.

Since it’s basically a beefed up 10/22, let’s add the takedown feature and the improved trigger from recent models. Check.

Toss in a threaded barrel. Check.

Crap. I may have to get one to go with my SR9c.

Video has some good close up shots and shows him changing out the magwell adapter from Ruger to Glock.

While I'm fond of Ruger stuff in general and the PC in specific,  that thing is giving Keltec a run for it's money in the ugly dept.

I wonder what the barcode on the receiver is for.
Maybe a rare occurence, but then you only have to get murdered once to ruin your whole day.

I'm torn on it.

On the one hand, I like the design, I like that it uses Glock mags, and the expected retail price is nice (I've seen pre-orders in the high $400s).

On the other hand, I don't know what I'd do with it other than consume ammo.  Yes, 9mm is cheap plinking fodder, but so is 223.  I already have a 223 AR carbine.  For "home defense", I have the AR and a thoroughly vetted 12g with all the bells and whistles.

However, on the gripping hand, this could be a nifty centerfire for my kids, what with the low recoil, reduced noise, and adjustable LOP.  As a reloader and caster, I could probably come up with some interesting loads.

I don't need it, but I want it.  I suppose it'll come down to independent reviews, the street price, and how it feels in my hands.

Good points mtnbkr.  I’ll probably get one anyway and sell my mini-14 to make room for it in the safe. I’ll keep my M4gery tho.

Easily portable, can share mags with your carry gun. It's the same reasons I bought my Kel-Tec SUB2000!
I might not last very long or be very effective but I'll be a real pain in the ass for a minute!

That’s the funny thing. I’m about to own a multi mag Sub2K gen2. I’ve already paid for it, 8 just haven’t picked it up. Ah well.

Someone will do a tacticool stock, I'm sure.

This is interesting.

I kind of wish they’d go the other way and put out an old school wood stock for it.  But then I like the look of the stock on it now. Not everything has to have a pistol grip and a collapsible stock.

Yes. Someone else already did that, but I’ve heard it’s crap.

I have an original PC-9 that lives in the closet as one of my two 'bump in the night' guns, the other being an Ithaca Model 37.  This would have a lot of potential as a truck gun.  I will be very interested to see this in person.

Yes. Someone else already did that, but I’ve heard it’s crap.

The Chiappa M1-9, a craptastic blowback carbine that kinda looks like the M1 carbine, but has little functional similarity:
