The Great Trigonometrical Survey of India
« on: April 12, 2018, 07:46:07 AM »
Just learned about this interesting event in India's history.
First learned about it when watching this video by Practical Engineering about how land surveying works, those devices are called a theodolite by the way, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SPCewaAfqPA Also some tips on how to do land surveying yourself on your own land.
In it he mentions The Great Trigonometrical Survey of India. Besides mapping the interior India, they were also looking into what the shape of the earth was. In this video it get's explained. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pOYQQMZfeQs Also during this time is when they discovered Mt. Everest, and that it was the tallest mountain. There is a small Wiki on it, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Great_Trigonometrical_Survey
"so I ended up getting the above because I didn't want to make a whole production of sticking something between my knees and cranking. To me, the cranking on mine is pretty effortless, at least on the coarse setting. Maybe if someone has arthritis or something, it would be more difficult for them." - Ben

"I see a rager at least once a week." - brimic

I love how he carefully laid out a grid with the flags, and then took sights everywhere except on the grid.
