Little House on the Prairie author Laura Ingalls Wilder is no longer a person to be looked up to because (naturally) she was racist.

Just bought a 9 volume set of her works. My children will enjoy it.
I wish the Ring had never come to me. I wish none of this had happened.

So do all who live to see such times. But that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given to us. There are other forces at work in this world, Frodo, besides the will of evil. Bilbo was meant to find the Ring. In which case, you also were meant to have it. And that is an encouraging thought

The leftists are using tried and proven techniques. Control the language, control the history, control the narrative and you control the people. Worked well for the National Socialists German Workers Party.
For a while.
If ye love wealth better than liberty, the tranquility of servitude better than the animating contest of freedom, go home from us in peace. We ask not your counsels or your arms. No one has any perspective.  Most of these leftists never make any effort to put themselves in another person's shoes.  They can't even imagine actually living in another time where their priorities might be wildly different.

And I didn't think the Indians actually lived there.  They just passed through occasionally.

We seriously need to invent a time travel machine so we can go back into the past and eliminate these nascent Nazi wannabes before they can do really horrible things to people they will never be able to meet. [tinfoil] [popcorn]

They keep this up,  and Trump will remain in office forever.

This one has crossed into "fire up the helicopter rides" for me.  I loved those books as a kid.  Can't speak to the TV show, never watched it.

^^^That was a really good article.  My wife and I were talking about this last night, and the perils of using our 21st century sensibilities to judge the actions and attitudes of the past.  History and actions occur in a context of the culture and attitudes of the times.  Two centuries from now, which of our 'enlightened' attitudes will be seen as hopelessly old-fashioned, prejudiced or indecent?

I've read the books, and never once does any character ask another character their preferred pronouns.

Not once.

The Ingalls family was part of the wave of squatters or illegal settlers who entered and established homes in Montgomery County.

Kind of ironic given the other hot topic of the minute.

The book, The Long Death gives a detailed account of the Minnesota Sioux Uprising. Hair-raising stuff.

I might have to give that book a go. Of late I have been reading classic Westerns that are off copyright and free on Amazon and Gutenberg. It has gotten me to think a bit about the portrayal of the savage Indian that scalped and tortured every white settler they saw vs some modern interpretations of the Indian as a peaceful and innocent inhabitant of the land that wouldn't hurt a flea and was practically vegan.

I'd like to poke around in some reliable, factual history on the subject.

You're going to find it a mixed bag.   The Indians didn't scalp, torture, or otherwise attack every settler they could get their hands on,  they weren't vegans but they did appreciate a balanced diet.  Some were friendly.  Some who were friendly became enemies when they found out we weren't all nice guys.  Some were allied with us only because their Indian enemies also became our enemies.

There were something like 350 distinct tribes of "Indians" in North America in the period around 1700 to 1800. It stands to reason that they weren't all the same.

I recognize there are and were many tribes, many of them allied to European settlers. I was speaking more to tribes like the Apache, who until recent times were considered rather ruthless. Some modern accounts would portray them as puppy dogs that never took a single hair off a settler (or other tribes for that matter).

I've read some accounts (and they may be true, which is why I'd like to read further) that say it was the whites who started scalping, and the Indians copied it.
