Justice Kennedy announces his retirement
« on: June 27, 2018, 02:12:28 PM »
All of the news sources are saying Kennedy will retire. This should make midterms even more interesting.

https://www.nytimes.com/2018/06/27/us/politics/anthony-kennedy-retire-supreme-court.html

NYT even mentions this could affect gun rights.

That will be very interesting. Especially given Ginsburg's age. I'm thinking she's holding off on retirement because, Trump. If he gets a second term though,  I don't think she'll last through it even if she wants to.

Maybe Kennedy's retirement will cause her to throw in the towel too, or like you said retire a day after the 2020 election.

Mine is an evil laugh.

So will the Republicans hurry up and appoint a replacement before the election, or use this issue to boost GOP turn-out?

Another article:

https://www.cnbc.com/2018/06/27/anthony-kennedy-retiring-from-supreme-court.html

But his retirement isn't until July. Trump is going to have to move fast to put in a replacement before this congress is done and the next crew takes office in January. This just points up why it's going to be important for us to hold our noses and vote for whoever supports Trump, regardless of other thoughts, views, or feelings.

I only wish Bader-Ginsberg had announced her retirement, but I think she'll stay until she drops dead on the bench rather than allow trump to name her successor.

It better be the former, because you KNOW for the Democrats it will be the latter.

Quote from:  New York Times article
The bitter 14-month battle over Justice Scalia’s seat, during which Republican senators refused to consider President Barack Obama’s nomination of Judge Merrick B. Garland, will most likely pale in comparison to the coming fight over Justice Kennedy’s seat.

I suspect that's the most truthful statement the NYT has printed in a good long while.

Glorious. First off the BBC calls him a conservative and then goes on to talk about two important LGBT decisions that he led in their favor. So are all conservatives Hitler, or was he not a conservative, or thank you.

Second, the radleft is like a dog on his last bit of energy chasing cars in a busy parking lot. Oh look trump! Throw the ball, trump, throw the ball! Oh he threw it!!!! Chase, chase, chase..... *Side eye. You didn't really throw the ball did you trump? All that outrage must be exhausting.

The left will pull out all the stops to impede any nomination.

I wish the Ring had never come to me. I wish none of this had happened.

So do all who live to see such times. But that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given to us. There are other forces at work in this world, Frodo, besides the will of evil. Bilbo was meant to find the Ring. In which case, you also were meant to have it. And that is an encouraging thought

The Republicans already applied the nuclear option to SCOTUS nominees the last time.  The only way this gets significantly delayed is if some Republicans don't like the nominee.

Well, it is going be really interesting to see if the Supreme Court takes any of the gun cases they have been ignoring when he's gone...  concealed carry, AW bans, etc.

If Ginsberg would throw in the towel he could nominate Garland and blow all the dems minds.

Best belated birthday present EVAR !!!!!

Here's Trump list of replacements from 2017:  https://www.whitehouse.gov/briefings-statements/president-donald-j-trumps-supreme-court-list/

Don Willett would be interesting choice.

So, Pryor and Haridman were the other two "finalists" from the Gorsuch nomination.  Will Trump go with either of them or go back to the list ??

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_H._Pryor_Jr.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thomas_Hardiman

Although going with the youngest on his list https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Patrick_Wyrick just insure his legacy lasts for a long, long, long time sould also make lefties heads explode.

Forget the Democrats - the only thing that can keep a good Trump nominee from being confirmed are RINOs in the Senate.

And as for RBG - it wouldn't surprise me too much if we've been witnessing a Weekend at Bernie's scenario for the past couple of years already with her.
Trump won in 2016. Democrats haven't been so offended since Republicans came along and freed their slaves.
