Went to my local Cigar Lounge last Thursday and there were 6-7 people staring in rapt attention at the biggest of the big screen TV's. No, not a sporting event, nor a pron movie, nor anything that one would expect to see in a place where people (mostly men) gather to smoke cigars, shot the *expletive deleted*it, and occasionally watch sporting events on TV.
It was Episode 6 of Season 1 of the Netflix series The Crown.
I, of course made a comment to the effect of "Didn't we kick their asses out in 1776?" and was promptly shushed by all assembled. And just so everyone understands, the gentlemen and ladies that attend this lounge are not what one would consider as upperclass or aristocracy, but working middle class people. Salesmen, managers, minor government functionaries, accountants, small businessmen, and the like. Americans.
All sitting in rapt attention watching a show about Queen Elizabeth II.
And after 20 minutes, I had joined them in being thoroughly absorbed and sucked in by the program. So we have binged watched it at the cigar lounge. Since I missed the first five episodes of Season I, they are being kind enough to restart it, and I watched episodes 1 and 2 today, and shall go watch episode 3 and 4 tomorrow, and episode 5 on Wednesday.
I will say that the acting is top-notch. John Lithgow as Churchill is simply superb. All the other actors as amazingly good. The cinematography is excellent, it's historically accurate, as are the props.
Highly recommend.
