I know this is a long-shot, but I'll post it anyway...A few hours north of me there is a devastating fire that is not anywhere close to being under control. And it is driving people away from their homes and businesses.
This group who run a tortoise sanctuary need some help. (As do a number of other groups, of course). In addition to material and cash help, I believe they are also looking for people to foster some or most or all of their tortoises so if that's something you have room for and you're close enough to make it happen, please contact them.
I currently do not have the means to help them so I pass this on to do something.
There is also a general need for aid to the afflicted humans and numerous pets and livestock but tortoises are easy to help with in a way that horses or burros or someone else's cats and the like are not.
WE ARE IN DIRE NEED! THE CARR FIRE IS BARRELING DOWN ON US! We need to borrow a truck to keep hooked to the tortoise evacuation trailer. Both of our trucks broke down. We have our motorhome hooked to one of the trailers.
We haven't wanted to alarm you guys but this fire is out of control and erratic. It grew 40,000 acres over night and is 81,000 acres now with only 5 percent containment. We are on day 6 of this fire with no promise in sight. It is growing 20,000-40,000 acres every 12 hours. It has destroyed 500 homes and 5,000 threatened. 38,000 people have been evacuated and we are next. The weather has been 111-115 making it that much worse. It is staying in the triple digits for the next week. The fire is 5-7 miles from us. This fire made it's own tornado and threw a burning piece of wood a mile. Spot fires are everywhere. It is raining ash here. 34,000 Fire personal are concentrating on evacuating the people because the fast spread and not fighting the fire. It has jumped the Sacramento River several times. They are concentrating on not letting it jump HWY 5. We have already lost 3 fire personal and 3 people are missing.
