Question about inductive charging and magnetic fields
« on: August 29, 2018, 10:35:13 AM »
I have an idea to make a spot in my car a cell phone holder/charger.  I'd like to run a wireless charging pad (similar to this) behind the panel, and some neodymium magnets to hold the phone still.

The idea is I just toss the phone at the spot, the magnets grab and hold it, and it starts charging automatically.

Does anyone know if strong magnets interfere with and/or block Qi protocol wireless charging?

My wife's iPhone has a magnet on the back for her car mount, and it does not interfere with charging using an Anker Qi wireless charging pad.  Her phone also charges on my 2016 Toyota Tacoma Qi wireless charging under the dash.

They shouldn't interfere with the charging.  I'd be concerned about them magnetizing (or demagnetizing) something inside the phone.

The thought occurred to me, but Magnetic phone mounts have been a thing for a while now, and I haven't heard of issues with the magnets.

WHATEVER YOUR DEFINITION OF "INFRINGE " IS, YOU SHOULDN'T BE DOING IT.

One worry - induction current. Fries electronics.

*Any* wire, exposed to a lightning strike, even nearby, will induce a current.
