Ok, the "which Heinlein book to read first" thread reminded me of this....
So I'm in Iraq, we've just got back from a night mission. Don't remember what exactly, but most of the night runs were either security for EOD on IED sweeps or security for construction crews. Anyway, we're all sitting in the back of the hootch waiting for the Lt and Ssgt to come back from their debrief so we could do our debrief. We had a TV and DVD player back there so someone decides to throw a movie in to kill time. Not a bad idea, but they chose
Irreversible.
Now, this movie has a lot going against it. It's French, it uses a telling the story in reverse gimmick, and the trailers or whatever on the DVD are like 18 minutes of weird colors flashing to incredibly grating music. I think those were trailers anyway, something in the special features. But on the plus side it has Monica Belluci, so what the hell right?
I won't bore you with the entire plot, but it has two really disgusting scenes that I'll probably never get out of my head.. A guy in a place called Club Rectum getting his head crushed with a fire extinguisher, and the worrld's longest rape scene. Just really horribly graphic stuff, made worse by how long the scenes were. The director seemed to revel in the depravity of it, and I'm not ashamed to admit that the thought of people actually watching that for entertainment makes me a little sick. I felt like Nic Cage in "8mm" when he's down in that crazy illegal porn shop.
So in conclusion: never under any circumstances watch "Irreversible," I'm really dissapointed in Monica Belluci for being associated with it, and what the hell is wrong with the french?
