Microsoft Office Starter download question
« on: October 01, 2018, 01:59:52 AM »

I'm trying to find a safe site to to download Microsoft Office Starter for Windows 7.  So far, no luck.  Can anyone suggest a site?

Thanks.

What's Microsoft Office Starter?

[Edit]Never mind -- found it. https://support.office.com/en-us/article/introduction-to-office-starter-2010-26d725e3-4570-4829-a534-627728b10e85

Search told me that CNET has it, but I couldn't find it on the CNET site. A review in betanews sent me to this site: https://www.downloadcrew.com/?act=notFound -- where the program doesn't seem to exist. It was a stripped-down version of Office 2010, so it may not even exist any more.

It's no longer available for download that I can see. You could try this.

Scroll to the bottom, and you'll see the free online version.

AFAIK, Starter Edition was never available for download.  It only came with preloaded OEM Windows systems.   And, not for all that long.   It was intended as a basic word processor and spreadsheet for OEMs to bundle with computers, to replace Microsoft Works.   If Office Starter Edition ever breaks you're SOL.

If you're looking for a free word processor and spreadsheet, have you considered Libre Office and Open Office? Both are file-compatible with Microsoft Office file formats (both the old and new ones), and the menu structure and layout is very similar to the old Office layout (not the new ribbon layout, which I loathe and detest).

BTW - I recently became aware of an office suite from, IIRC, Germany, called SoftMaker Office. It's a freebie for Android, although to get rid of ads and unlock "premium" features it costs $5.99. There is a Windows version, that they sell for $69.95. That price is good for one installation in commercial use, but up to five people in a non-commercial, family use. It offers a choice of a traditional menu bar, or a Microsoft-esque ribbon bar. I have the Android version on a tablet. Haven'y done much with it yet, but so far I like it.

For Windows, though, although I like the Android version better than I like Open Office, I'm not sure I like it $69.95 better.

[Edit to add]PC Magazine says there's a free version, called (cleverly) FreeOffice.

Thanks for the suggestions.  I'll check out Libre Office and Open Office.

Check out FreeOffice while you're at it. I just installed it as a test, and after some limited work with the word processor (TextMaker) and the spreadsheet (PlanMaker), I have to say that I am very impressed. I can't stand the new Microsoft ribbon menu structure, so I chose the classic menu layout during my installation. (You can toggle back and forth after the programs are up and running.) It opens very quickly, and looks more like Word and Excel than the corresponding modules in Libre Office. You have to set it to use .DOCX and XLSX as the default file format, but you can choose that (and you have to set that in Libre Office, as well). It has no option to save in the older .DOC and .XLS formats, but it has no trouble opening those files. I didn't have any heavily formatted documents to bring in as a test on how accurately it preserves formatting, but the letterhead I use, which has a graphic and three different fonts with custom character spacing, came in without any glitches.

I thought I had read that the license for personal use limits you to three machines. I checked the EULA during the installation, and it actually allows five machines, and they can belong to other family members, not just yourself.

As I said, I am very impressed. I haven't checked out the presentation module yet, but I don't have much need for Powerpoint, so if that's not perfect I'm not going to lose sleep over it.

[Edit to add]I just fired up the presentation module. It opened a Powerpoint slide show I made up a couple of years ago with a lot of formatting and a number of fly-in underlines and circles, and numerous fade-in and fade-out transitions. It all came in flawlessly.
