5.11 flashlights?
« on: October 06, 2018, 06:11:26 PM »
Does anyone know about these?

https://www.511tactical.com/edc-pl-2aaa.html

It has all the specs I look for in an EDC light, and the price is reasonable. Are these quality lights?

I didn't know 5.11 had retail shops, but they have one in St. Charles, right next to the Bass Pro. And the Duluth Trading store. And the Carhartt & Liberty Safe store.

There is a 5.11 store near Boston.  I went in there once.  Prices are way too high.

As to the flashlight, I have no idea, but this seven-year old thread might help: http://www.candlepowerforums.com/vb/showthread.php?325742-5-11-ATAC-L1-and-L2-flashlights

If you ever see these at Aldi, buy several.  It's not a normal-stock item; but I've seen them several times in the past couple of years:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZsxBYIzN_Lk    $7.

The only thing I don't like about that 5.11 flashlight's specs is it's AAA instead of AA.

This is my EDC flashlight: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00BU9DSHW  Before I got that, I carried the Aldi flashlight.

Thanks for the recommendation,  but I find I need a more low-profile light for pocket carry. I've been using inspection lights.

I suspect that 5.11 doesn't make those lights. They're a clothing brand, so that thing is probably farmed out to some Chinese flashlight factory and branded for them.  Could be good, could be crap.  I've never used one.

I will say that my preferred flashlight brand, Fenix, has several very similar lights that would be a known quantity from a company that primarially makes flashlights.

LD02, AAA bat, tail switch, $30 https://www.fenix-store.com/fenix-ld02-led-flashlight/

E05, AAA bat, twist switch $20 https://www.fenix-store.com/fenix-e05-led-flashlight-2014-edt/

LD02 v 2.0 pen light with UV. AAA bat, tail switch, nice pen clip, $30 https://www.fenix-store.com/fenix-ld02-v2-0-edc-led-penlight-with-uv-lighting/

Okay, but if you ever see the Aldi flashlights in the store, buy several to scatter around your house, put in the car, etc.  :D  They are good $20 flashlights for $7.

The S&W flashlight carries much better (in a jeans pocket) even tho' it's 1 inch in diameter; I think because it's shorter.  Unless you just need to carry in a shirt pocket, you might look for a 1-AA flashlight.  Fenix and Streamlite should make those... yep, look at a Fenix E12  https://www.fenix-store.com/fenix-e12-led-flashlight/

Some alternatives in that price range.  I have good very good experiences with OLight.

This seems to be the closest to what you are looking at.

This one I carry on a key chain daily.  It has survived a lot of abuse including a handful of times through the washing machine and drier.  It is twist to turn on which may not suit you.

This one is almost too small, but it is rechargeable.  It is twist to turn on, but had two brightness levels depending on how much you twist.

I initially read that as 5.11 fleshlights... carry on.

The stream light stylus pro are what most of us mechanics carry. $25ish for the AAA model and $60ish for the rechargeable

Does it really last 8 hours with AAA batteries?  Or at least close?  (I'm impressed)  That's my main reason for recommending AA models.
