Dueling Almanacs
« on: December 28, 2018, 06:51:15 AM »
https://www.wsj.com/articles/will-winter-be-nasty-or-nice-depends-which-farmers-almanac-you-read-11545929300

In the yellow corner, the Old Farmer's Almanac. In the orange corner, the Farmers' Almanac. For this winter, their weather predictions are uncharacteristically different. It's the showdown, the almanac version of the gunfight at the Okay Corral. Place your bets. What's it going to be? Will this winter be mild, or frigid?

For sentimental reasons, I'm rooting for the Old Farmer's Almanac. Aside from that one being the original, I spent a summer during college working for the family that (at the time) owned and published the Old Farmer's Almanac.

Highly amusing and entertaining.  I loved this fortygraft with the old ringie-dingie on the wall.

But it all kinda smacks of the fake rivalries between celebrities for publicity purposes.  I betcha there were a bunch of phone calls between the parties to arrange this "feud."

I was under the impression that these were all inaccurate.  I did enjoy looking at the magic charms, including dried monkey's paws, for sale in those years ago.

Isn't this usually decided by releasing a badger from a cage and whatever almanac it eats is the one that's right?

They both estimate 80% accuracy, but as one perfeshinil weather person said, they were both "generous" in their estimates.

Hell's bells, even this one isn't right from day to day:

Depends on what the badger's horoscope says.
A plan is just a list of things that doesn't happen.
Is defenestration possible through the overton window?
