The New York Times discovers major calibers
« on: March 28, 2019, 12:19:06 PM »

We discussed the source article in JAMA when it was first published.  We should all be carrying something starting with a .4 or .357 according to the fatality percentages cited in the article.

Good thing I carry a gun that shoots a tiny 0.1 decimeter bullet. It gives the bad guy a chance. ;)

Not this, uh, "stuff", again.

I miss the old days, when a .45 was unheard of, and everyone carried .11 calibers.

.32 48%
.40 55%
9mm 57%
.45 67%
.357 72%
"Other" 83% (WTF is "Other?" .50AE, 410ga, .50BMG?)

Seems caliber isn't as important as velocity X caliber to me. Also, are we including rifles or just handguns? What about shot placement? What about bullet design? Hardball VS a good HP makes for a BIG difference! A .22 to the heart is much deadlier than a .50 BMG to the hand I would bet. Such BS "research!"

Over recent decades, the size of bullets fired by the typical handgun has increased. Changes in design have made it easier to fire big bullets from concealable weapons, and manufacturers have marketed more powerful guns as better tools for self-defense.

BS. The trend in the U.S. has been downward. The 9mm replaced the .45 ACP in popularity, and as small, concealable pistols became in vogue more and more people have taken to carrying pocket pistols chambered in .380 ACP and .32 ACP. The FBI spurred interest in the 10mm and .40 S&W, and both have lost popularity in favor of the 9mm Parabellum.

Quote
In the 1970s and 1980s, the guns most commonly used in crime tended to be revolvers or small, inexpensive pistols that fired .22-caliber rounds, so-called for their 0.22-inch diameter.

And then Congress, in its infinite wisdom, outlawed "Saturday night specials," so the bad guys had to go out and steal real guns for their nefarious activities. So blame the caliber war on Congress.

Where a 50BMG only has to pass within inches of your body to do the same damage. I saw it in a movie. ;)

Pocket pistols have been around for a long time.  Pocket 9mm Luger is the newer piece.  I guess I would say many police have gone from 40 cal to 9mm in recent years.

Also, widespread legal concealed carry is relatively new in the scheme of things.

.32 ACP and .25 ACP were also pretty popular before the "Wonder 9" era, particularly for poorer people who were more likely to be involved in crime, and I think that's where their data starts. So they gloss over the move to bigger calibers in the '80s and '90s.

And that part of the move to larger calibers was that with magazine sizes restricted, you might as well have 10 .40 S&W bullets as opposed to 10 9mm bullets.

With magazine size restrictions mostly gone again, people started moving down to 9mm again.

Do the math, you ammosexuals. 45 millimeter is 5 times bigger than .9 millimeter. 5 TIMES!

fistful is possibly from the slide rule days when order of magnitude (decimal point placement) had to be estimated / figured separately.  There was no way to enter 0.9 into a slide rule, or, for that matter, 0.45.

Thus, 45 ÷ 9 = 5

450 ÷ 900 = 5

4.5 ÷ .009 = 5

45,000 ÷ 9 = 5

And 5 = 50

I did my math before adding the decimal point to the 9, for extra funniness. And just look how much fun you all are having with it!

Shhhhh.... you also mixed units.  But that doesn't mean you're wrong.   Whatever truth is acceptable to you is Truth.  You can accept the honorable title of "Caliber Truther" and stand proudly beside the "Mueller Truthers."
