Need recommendations for Blu-Ray burner
« on: January 02, 2020, 01:49:38 PM »
I'm finally getting around to adding a Blu-Ray burner to my Windows PC.   Looking for an external unit that connects via USB.

I am intrigued by this one, but a bit put off by the negative reviews about the software:

Anyone have recommendations?  Thx

I have an LGBP50NB40 blue ray writer - I've only used it a couple of times, but it worked OK. It's under $100 at Best Buy.

I have what's basically the internal drive version of that. Seems to work pretty well, though I haven't used it much either.

Why do you care about the CyberLink MediaSuite software?  I don't have a BluRay burner, but doesn't Windows support that natively now?  (IIRC, CyberLink Media Suite was decent many years ago, but maybe they haven't kept up and the technology left them behind)

I don't have much to add except I have a pair of LG drives from like 10 years ago that still work, so that brand is pretty good.

I am curious though:  What is the use case for burning optical disks with any regularity?  My last 3 laptops haven't had a disc reader, and I haven't really missed it.  Disks are bulky, kinda fragile, and have limited storage capacity.

For me, the ability to burn M-Discs (which are archival quality, with a supposed 1000 year lifespan) was a big selling point. You can get 100GB on a ~$10 BDXL M-disc.
