Judean date palm brought back from extinction

This is the date tree mentioned in the Bible...

One plant was grown from an ancient seed earlier in 2008, but it was a male and thus could not reproduce by itself.

Now several more have been grown!  Hopefully there are female trees which can be reproduced successfully.

I'm not seeing anything in the article about the Romans ripping up all of the Judean date palms. Seems that they enjoyed them, too, and it seems that the range was a lot broader than just historic Judea.

I read that somewhere else.  From reading elsewhere, it looks like you are probably right, they did hang on longer than that.

Yeah, but we need one that lives in urban/suburban areas (aside from the usual 2 legged predators), not just out in the countryside.

Wouldn't that be more of "brought back from long dormancy"?

Or are we going to change the meaning of extinction so if a species is gone for x number of years it is considered extinct, even if brought back to existing?  =|

Considering they found old seeds, I am not sure if it qualifies as extinct.  Pretty close though.

So anyone know why it went extinct?  Is it hard to grow?
