Black star means this person is a pita and should be told they have the wrong paperwork every time they come into the DMV

Thank you, DIttoHead and Hawkmoon (#13).

Jim147, they don't need a black star to know I'm a pita.

WHATEVER YOUR DEFINITION OF "INFRINGE " IS, YOU SHOULDN'T BE DOING IT.

My new DL just says "NOT FOR REAL ID PURPOSES." So I guess I got me a fake ID. Cool. Now I can buy beer.

But only fake beer, not Real Beer.

Wonder how I will get mine?
No utility bills (Apartment complex handles all that), never needed a passport.
Birth Cert, SSN card, Bank Statements, Driver's License, DD214, are all on hand though.

Those should do it. I used my VA health system ID card instead of a DD-214. Don't know if those are interchangeable in all states.

Apartment handles the cable bill and Internet?  (those count as utility bills here, even tho' they are not really public utilities)

They count as utility bills here to. Each person's DMV or state DOT site should have a list of acceptable residency documentation. Here's the example from Idaho DOT:

Quote

Applicant must provide two documents. Documents must display the applicant’s name and principal Idaho residence address. Acceptable documents (must not be laminated) include:

    Lease/rental agreement, mortgage or deed
Account statement from one or two different public utilities. Must show service address of residency and customer's name; 3⁄4 statement page accepted. Cell phone bills are not accepted.
Account statement from bank or financial institution
Tax document Form W-2 or Form-1099 (may be the same document used in Step 3 above if dated within current year)
Medical or insurance provider statement, invoice, or explanation of benefits
Pay stub or employment verification (must list the customer's legal name)
Idaho school enrollment records with current address or VOC for current school year and current address (college ID not accepted)
Motel, hotel, campground or RV park receipt on letterhead that indicates 30 days or more of residency
Military Leave and Earning Statement (LES) to evidence Idaho residency of applicant deployed outside of Idaho while on active duty
    Relief agency or shelter certification
Residency affidavit (must be signed by adult over 18)
Court documents (original or non-altered, and must have current address on the document for proof of Idaho residency)
Record of property taxes assessed or paid (receipt date within one year)
A vehicle, homeowner’s, or renter’s liability card, binder, or bill issued by an Idaho-based carrier (must be valid and unexpired, must have current residential address, and can be original paper, print, or photocopy of e-document)

"No utility bills"

You have a cell phone? That's a utility bill.

Generally, it's not for this purpose.

Yup. Neither Idaho, nor (IIRC) CA accept cell phone bills.

Louisiana, right?

Looks like Louisiana does accept cell phone bills. They also accept W-2s and 1099s with a partial SSAN. My state doesn't -- my first attempt was a bust because I brought a 1099 with only the last 4 digits, and they rejected that.

Well that's a bummer.

I'll be damned. Apparently cell phone bills aren't acceptable in Virginia, either.

I'm reading through Virginia's requirements, and I have consternation about something...

The way it reads it seems that, even though I'm a US citizen since birth, I'll have to provide 1 document proving Proof of Identity and a separate document for Proof of Legal Presence???

Is that correct?

How the hell is that required when my proof of identity (birth certificate) is defacto proof that I'm a US citizen entitled to be here?

I hope I'm reading that wrong.

OK, just went through the Virginia online document selector... I don't need to provide separate identity and legal presence documents.

An expired passport is still a valid photo ID, ain't it?  For something like 10 years?  Just not good for travel?  Or is it only useful when getting a new passport?

Wife needs to upgrade her DL and just found her birth certificate and passport this morning (been tearing the house up looking for 'em)  The passport expired 8 years ago.

"An expired passport is still a valid photo ID, ain't it?"

Not 100% sure, but I don't think so. Maybe for some private transactions, but I suspect nothing that would be a local, state, or Fed gov. transaction.

Well, it looks like in some cases yes, it is...

https://getawaytips.azcentral.com/can-use-expired-passport-travel-nationally-usa-5475.html

The only problem for me in that scenario is that I got my passport when I was 15, so it was only good for 5 years, which means that it expired in.... 1985.

I really should get a new passport.

OK, doesn't seem as if it will be that big a hassle to get a new passport. $110. Don't see myself needing one any time soon, but still not a bad thing to have.

https://duckduckgo.com/?q=Real+ID+required+documents&ia=news

I had to take:
  • Birth certificate (or passport)
  • Driver's license
  • Social security card (or 1099 showing FULL SSAN)
  • Bank statement no older than 90 days
  • Utility bill not older than 90 days

And all you need is to be able to walk into a polling place and declare out of your mouth you are legal to vote and you can.  Where are all the Howler Monkeys disparaging the Real ID as it discriminates against, well, just about everyone.

For a few more bucks, have them issue a passport card while you're at it. Not valid for travel to Yurp, but valid for crossing into and back from Mexico and Canader.

Oregon still hasn't implemented Real ID. The state has put it off for as long as possible, and now Real IDs won't be available until July 6th at the earliest. Provided they don't *expletive deleted*ck it up like they do everything else.

And of course, my license expired February 2nd, which means I'm going to have to go to the DMV to renew my license twice in the same year.
