Wow, they figured out a way to package the South American bola as a less lethal restraint.  I had never heard of this but just read an article in the Seattle media that the Seattle Police are testing it.

Not a bad idea for restraining someone who is running away.  Given time, it might even help if someone is coming toward an officer, but it would still require hands on to put them in cuffs.

Donut Operator showed a video a while back of a man with two knives confronting several police.  Taser wasn't effective and he ended up getting shot and killed.  This might have helped get him restrained enough to disarm.  Hard to say for sure.  I also don't know how quickly someone could free themselves from this.

It might be another good tool if it works well.  Won't replace other tools.

I wonder if this system could be modified to use a net or something similar.  Maybe help restrain stray animals or drones.

I like the idea except it seems to require quite a bit of side and rearward clearance. Doubt if it would have worked with the girl shot while trying to stab the other girl since the weights would have impacted the car  and maybe the other girl before wrapping around her.

I don't think it would effectively restrain the arms unless they were tucked in on your side.  If you held your arms to the side even a little, it would interfere.  If someone had their legs spaced apart, it might not work well.

I still think it could be a good tool in certain cases.

Seems like cultural appropriation to me.

Only Argentinian, Brazilian, and Bolivian Gauchos can use bolos!

That's fine, in this country we'll call them stringy-balls.

This looks like something JoergSprave needs to build.
A plan is just a list of things that doesn't happen.
Is defenestration possible through the overton window?

I suspect the most common use of this is going to be to restrain/take down the mentally-disturbed individual.

Can you imagine the absolute *expletive deleted*it storm that's going to erupt when police use one of these and wraps around the suspect's neck and kills him?

I was thinking if the police were in a foot chase and were close enough, they could use this to hobble the suspect.  I don't know what the range is.

After watching videos of several successful deployments on the companies website, including ones that relied on the suspect being "startled" to allow officers to close, I am not a fan.

It will work in some specific situations, and sorta work in others, but I don't think it brings enough to the table to justify an extra piece of equipment to train on and carry.  It also appears to be another pistol shaped less lethal that an officer can reach for and grab a gun instead. Taser's already have that role covered.

Get thee back thy Good Idea Fairy!!

We really need the net gun from I, Robot, Running Man, The Fifth Element, and many others.
