Let's address the problem
« on: April 18, 2022, 09:33:20 PM »
An interesting article from The Truth About Guns web site suggests that some researchers are finally twigging to what I have been saying for years: The solution to "gun violence" is to address the violence, not the guns.

I always wondered how come all them great brains never noticed that with all the billions (millions?  trillions?) of rounds fired in the U.S. every year, how come there are only about 35,000 deaths, including suicides.  "Only" is a lot, but still, look at all the numbers.

Is reason finally starting to override emotion?

Nah, of course not.  That's just Terry's Golden Dream.

Guns have never "committed" the violence.  They have just escalated the level of violence.

I don't even accept that as a valid premise.

And conversely, guns have a long history of DEescalating, and even preventing, violence.

That moment when Sumdood and his buddy walk in the store, and see both of the guys behind the counter looking ready to draw, and then turn around and walk right back out...

Hundreds of cases where that's true:

Every time this comes up I think of this:

CALLAHAN <coffee cup in left hand>
Well... you don't think we're going to let you just walk out of here, do you?

ROBBER LEADER <grins>
We?  Who's we, sucka?

CALLAHAN <puts cup down, covering his right hand>
Me.  And Smith.  And Wesson.

One of my jobs when I was associate editor of American Rifleman magazine was compiling The Armed Citizen for publication.

The 12 to 14 snippets that appear each month were just the tip of the iceberg of what NRA members submitted out of their local newspapers.
