TL;DR: Former sheriff of Santa Clara County, CA (aka Silicon Valley) was doing a pay-for-play around CCW permits. Make a sizable donation to her campaign, get a permit. Annoy her and your permit will not be renewed. Convicted on six civil counts of corruption, Laurie Smith was able to retire before being removed from office.
More info on the lucky few who did get permits in Santa Clara County:

Upon conviction:
Public caning/flogging. Pension revoked, civil asset forfeiture of everything purchased while serving as Sheriff, including real-estate and cars. 20 years prison, no parole.
I have zero tolerance for jack booted thugs and abuse of public office.

Corruption in "may issue" states has been recognized for DECADES. IIRC, even in
The Godfather
(Mario Puzo's 1969 novel on which the movie was based) there was a comment that one of the gangsters had a carry permit that cost $10,000.

Trump won in 2016. And again in 2024. Democrats haven't been so offended since Republicans came along and freed their slaves.
