For Fistful: the rise of Big LED Lamp
« on: March 31, 2023, 09:07:06 PM »

For most of the lamps and overhead lights, I have gone to the WIZ multi-color LED bulbs.  We really like being able to turn them on, off, adjust brightness, and adjust color via the app or with Alexa voice control.

"A new generation of streetlamps somehow made city nights seem darker."

Ah, the low-pressure sodium lights. The actually put out more lumens, but because of the light wavelength, they seemed darker.

I HATE sodium lights.

I was very, very happy when the electric company in my area replaced all of the sodium lights with new LEDs.

I, personally, am very much a fan of LEDs. I have very few incandescent or fluorescent bulbs in my house anymore.

I'm also very much a fan of that nice, warm, yellow glow from 2,700 K lights. It's so freaking warm and inviting. I have those bulbs in my living room and my bedroom.

I also have four daylight bulbs in the ceiling fan in my bedroom if I need really bright white light for anything that I'm doing, like sewing a button back on or reading instructions for my CPAP.

My adjustable LEDs seem to be brighter on "Warm White" than on "Daytime."

Just be glad that your streetlights aren’t purple like many are around here allegedly due to a fault or manufacturing defect.

I have had zero issue with modern LED bulbs and the color matches old lights pretty well. We even were able to get a couple cases of them from the power company for free and still have half a case left after replacing all the failing incandescent and stupid CFLs.

Instead of complaining about new technology, it would be nice if we could just let people make/sell/use whatever old tech they'd prefer. But that would be too freedomy - gross.

One take-away from the article is that different people often have much different experiences with the same things, but we just as often assume our experiences with thing x are universal. I'm not a big fan of curly-q, twister CFLs, but they worked very well for me back in the day. They didn't work so well for everyone. Same with LEDs, although they're much better tech.

I think the only real problem with LEDs is that they're rushing the whole thing out too quickly, and taking away other options. I also wonder how many failing LED bulbs would have worked just fine, if people understood the limitations. Instead, people buy them, and haplessly install them in enclosed fixtures, on old dimmer switches. Even if they do work, the customer may have bought the wrong color, but didn't even know they had a choice.

My adjustable LEDs seem to be brighter on "Warm White" than on "Daytime."

Having spent way too much time reading spec's for LED luminaires and lamps, I have noticed that lumen output sometimes drops when CCT is 5000K or above, as compared to the same light at 4100K or below.
